George Mason's Jim Larranaga has had serious discussions with Miami officials about the ACC school's coaching vacancy, multiple sources told CBSSports.com on Thursday. Whether Larranaga is leveraging for a better deal from George Mason or on the verge of actually moving to Miami is unclear, both sources said. But the talks are advanced and ongoing, and the 61-year-old New York native has developed into Miami's top target.

I'm sure I'm not the first to pose this opinion....but he is probably trying to leverage more $$$ to keep up with Coach Smart's contract. He's got a base of around 525K, I think.....

i guess the hard snows last winter took its toll on the Larranga family....time to retire to sunny south beach.

I thought it was 800k after they made the Final Four?

I think that is right, it might even be closer to 900k. He and Blaine both get paid from two separate sources, so the total of the two basically makes up their "base" pay.

big blow to the conference.... depending on who they end up hiring GMU could be a sub top 3 team next season. It also is a very good job for anyone who wants it too since they have a very good team they can inherit.

It's not a god-awful blow if Larranaga leaves....Mason is a cherry gig, as long as their AD isn't a complete moron and has the foresight to at least consider the VCU-model....they'll be better off in the long run.

Coach L is 61....I don't blame him one bit for tryin' his luck in the ACC. It'll be interesting to see who follows (recruit/players)....Mason could make this work for them. Of course, they'll need to consider some upgrades fro practice facility and a scoreboard not used by James Naismith

I don't think this is good for the conference in general. A 14 year veteran of the conference leaves (vs resigning/fired). It might open the door to others....Blaine and Flint making the decision to leave also. While Flint might not be considered a super top guy...he is pretty good. And as much crap as we give ODU....losing Blaine would not be good either (although I really haven't heard of many programs knocking on his door...as much as ODU fans might think differently).

Losing a young assistant turned CAA head coach after 3-4 years is one thing - a stepping stone to bigger and better. Losing a veteran coach could say something much different.

But at 61, coach L might feel that if he can get 3-5 years out of miami (or more if he can turn their program around) he can set up his family, kids, grandkids for life with whatever salary he makes there.....even if only for 3-5 years. Good move for him.

I just hope that GMU can bring in someone who can maintain their program or make it better. DC is a good area...and GMU is a good program (probably the #1-#2 program in DC except for those who think a "named" school aka ACC/BE is automatically better).

Hey, Bruce Pearl needs a job. Capel needs a job. Several very good long-term major asst coaches (Dooley, Schaytt, Springman) might jump at the chance. Perhaps the head coach from Vermont. But competing in the DC area for recruits would be best with an already well known "named" coach....someone who has a reputation.

Gonna be interesting.
