Style Weekly is dead to me now.

Chris Mooney

University of Richmond’s basketball coach Chris Mooney has largely flown under the radar in a city that seems overly enamored with hoops at Virginia Commonwealth University. VCU coaches Anthony Grant and Jeff Capel left indelible marks, moving on to bigger and better programs at Alabama and Oklahoma. VCU also had Eric Maynor, the star point guard who nailed “the shot” to beat Duke University in the first round of the NCAA tournament three years ago.

Mooney’s Spiders, however, may be better. Last year UR made it to the NCAA tournament as a No. 7 seed, higher than any Rams team of the last five years, and finished the season ranked No. 24 in the country.

I couldn't pick the guy out of a lineup.

The Spiders were better than us last year for sure considering the rest of their season (loss to us aside). We've been the better program however in the last 5 years though. The 7 seed and top 25 ranking is nice, but they didn't do anything with it getting spanked in the first-round by the 10 seed.

Our win over Duke in 2007, a one-point loss to UCLA in 2009, having 2 consecutive NBA first-round (top 20) draft picks, and having coaches move to both Oklahoma and Alabama in recent years easily push us above Richmond's one good year in that time span (a year which ultimately ended up with a first-round NCAA exit).

Mooney has done a great job there and is an excellent coach. There is a reason the party in Richmond is on Broad St. though.

i don't underatand what's so bad about the magazine stating UR "may be" better than VCU. in my honest opinion, i think they will be. as DB said, they were better last year as well. we can deny it all we want, but that's a fact.

also, i don't see why it's so bad that mooney gets a little pub for the good job he's done. i'd be giddy if we had UR's second half to last season and #7 seed.

they had an awesome season and deserve credit. i love hearing great things about our city rival. it makes it that much sweeter win we beat them.

Actually, I am going to deny it. I don't think they are a better team.

That's fine if they still want to name Mooney, doesn't really affect me, and he has done a fine job there. But, I don't think they are, or were, a better team than us.

just out of curiosity, why do you think we were better than richmond last year? and i'm not talking about us beating them at our place. one game does not make a season. i'm talking about the season as a whole. personally, i saw one team that was frustratingly inconsistent, and another who won huge ball games against very good teams when it mattered.

i just don't see how anyone can OBJECTIVELY sit there and say that our team was better than a #7 seed at-large. i just don't see it.

If the same UR team that was seeded #7 had won the CAA they certainly would not have been seeded as high. Yes we were maddenly inconsistent last year but I still feel we had the better team if not the better regular season.

Except for a brief run in the A10 tourney their post season was pretty inept. Say what you want about the CBI, but we came together and won the sucker. That's the same CBI that UR was bounced from the previous season.

F Style Weekly. A bigger group of effete dilletantes has yet to surface. And in the immortal words of VRam FUR.

Mason went to the Final Four several years ago. Were they better than VCU the last two years? Richmond has played in and lost the same number of NCAA games as VCU over the last 3 years. Were they better than VCU last year as a whole? Absolutely. When was the last time VCU was ranked in the top 25? Give Mooney his just due. He has put Richmond back on the basketball map and will probably have an NBA draft pick after this season. It doesn't matter what VCU and Richmond did 5 years ago. We are talking today.

You guys are starting to sound like a bunch of Mason fans. The Duke win was how many years ago?

Why is it necessary to inject vulgarity with a civil discussion? It shows a lack of class.

you're dead on wolfpack. while i will never, ever root for U of R in anything, i don't necessarily think it's a bad thing that they are back on the map. style weekly should no doubt write about them. a great city rivalry between two top notch college teams is a GREAT thing. i'd much rather play a good spiders team every year than a bad one.

and yes again, as wolfpack stated, U of R was better than us last season. anyone who would take our cbi win over their season is nuts.

(and seriously, the FUR thing in every thread became unfunny after the 10,000,000th time it was written. some of ya'll need a new shtick ;-)

Hey we beat them on the court that counts, rather than the court of public opinion. And as for living in the past I thought we were talking about last year. Finally, as for using vulgarity I promise never to use the term effete dilletantes on these boards again. ;)

Nobody hates ODU, UR and VA Tech more than I do. But let's be honest here. Four years ago nobody on these boards, including me, ever thought Mooney would have Richmond back in the NCAA's and ranked in the top 25 by now. And he did it playing a top notch schedule last year. He deserves the accolades he's getting.
