RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University Women’s Tennis Team will meet in-state rival Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament May 8 or 9 at Duke University’s Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.

It’s the fourth consecutive NCAA bid for VCU (18-9) and ninth overall. The Rams fell in the first round of the tournament the last two seasons, but reached the sweet 16 in 2006.

On the other side of VCU’s bracket, Richmond (17-5) will take on host and third-ranked Duke (23-3).

The Rams and Cavaliers last faced each other on May 11, 2007 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Clemson, S.C. Virginia won that contest, 4-2.

This season, the Cavaliers, who are 27th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, have been led by freshman Emily Fraser, an ACC All-Conference selection who is 26-12 in singles play this season. Fraser is 81st in the ITA singles rankings.

VCU has been paced by sophomore Kateryna Yergina, who is 16-9 in singles play, including 11-6 on the No. 2 court. Sophomore Laura Burns (23-5) and junior Olena Leonchuk (22-3) have also enjoyed standout campaigns.

The Rams, rated 45th by the ITA, have been idle since reaching the CAA Championship match April 19 versus Georgia State.

On the men’s side, VCU, which had reached 16 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, did not receive a bid in the 64-team bracket.

A nice surprise for the women. Didn't think they'd get in.

Bad luck for the men. If not for the injury to Charron in the CAA Semis, we would have easily taken the Title.
