The 2024-25 Season

Avila is averaging 18.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg (5.8 def rpg), 4.3 apg, 1.2 spg, and is shooting 52% on the year (37% from 3). Considering he's a 6'10" center, I would say that's pretty dang good, and those ratings aren't arbitrary.
That and if they kept a stat for fouls drawn when no foul was committed he'd lead the conference (and maybe the country). But defending DL here, except for one those are offensive stats. He IS slow on D (even for a 6'10" guy), the only blocked shots he has is from players accidentally shooting the ball at his hand, and I suspect most of the steals were from slumping off his man who he couldn't guard anyway. But yes, he is a good offensive player. Hail to the minion.

#2 defense nationally?

Like I alluded to in my prior post..Basketball involves offense and defense. These analytics only provide offenses statistics.

SLU played GW and Avila had 13 pts, 4 rebounds and 4 assists on 5-13 shooting which is respectable. The problem is Castro went 20 points and 9-11 shooting...mostly on wide open pick and roll dunks. Casto also had 9 rebounds. Avila can't guard the pick and roll which is a big problem which does not get accounted for in the analytics.

Castro is, in fact, a problem. Much more than Avila IMO

VCU was due for a night where the shots don't fall. We had played well on the road in A10 play (wins over Loyola, Joes, & Rhody and we scored at will in a close loss at Bona) so a "bad" road game was inevitable. I can deal with shots just not falling, but our guys just didn't play well at all. I'm dissapointed by the game, but the season isn't one game long so we have to get back on track.

I haven't read through the threads at all, but we all saw the fight at the end of the game. It sounds like the skirmish involved Phil's family and/or friends given that it appeared that some of those members were escorted out for safety reasons. I do hope that Phil is fine and can use the next 3 days to descompress and get ready for the game vs Richmond on Saturday.

VCU is 6-2 in A10 play which seems very reasonable given that 5 of those 8 games have been on the road (most likely 4 of those 5 teams will avoid the Pillow Fight so no gimmes). VCU has two very winnable games vs Richmond and La Salle coming up in the next week. We are expected to win those 2 games and if we do we'll get to 8-2 with a final 8 games that I don't find to be incredibly difficult. Let's get back at it!

Agreed. This stretch of games since the beginning of the season was a tough one, with only one game (Fordham) that I thought was kind of a gimme. Hopefully the team takes them seriously, but in the next five games I'm really only concerned about the away games against Dayton and MAYBE George Washington. BUT, we can't see another night like last night. Between just an off shooting night and some really bad decisions by the players and the coaching staff, we set ourselves up for failure in a very winnable game.

You can't control what your family will do or how they will react to things but unfortunate end to the last game he will play in his hometown. Certainly has to be a lot to mentally deal with for the young man.

Yes! I don't know Phil personally, but I've enjoyed watching him this season at VCU and I'm bummed for him that his experience back in St. Louis wasn't pleasant. Let's hope the team and staff has his back and takes it out on those Westhamptoners since we as VCU grads don't like members of our own hometown!
