Actually if I remember correctly, it's because of VCU MCV and Health having in its mission statement to not harm people, and alcohol is a poison that harms a lot of people. The hazing was also part of the pushback.

I think without the hazing incident RIGHT before the beer was supposed to be released, no one would have complained ... or at least the complaints wouldn't have been loud enough that the school changed directions on it.

the president of the school said the offer would make him the highest paid coach in the sport. We'll see

As far as contracts go in the NBA they did not come for him as strong as the media made it sound. They were throwing out 100 million in their social media posts. He was offered more from Kentucky.
