The 2024 Offseason Thread

the president of the school said the offer would make him the highest paid coach in the sport. We'll see
So they are going to at minimum double his current salary? which would still be about $2 mil less than the Laker Offer? For Big East Basketball? That is only a couple of years away from having to make some decisions itself. The long term math just doesn't make sense without a wealthy donor or two with money to burn. I mean if UConn knows its getting a P3 invite then maybe........

It's probably one of the worst HC jobs in the league. Absolutely divorced from reality fanbase, insane pressure to win, meddlesome ownership, toxic management culture, all the scrutiny and baggage LeBron brings, a middling roster with few picks and less cap space - plus you get LA traffic. It sounds horrendous.

I can totally see taking it for a ridiculous amount of money, or just to live in LA as a very, very wealthy person, but in terms of basketball I think UConn is a much better move (and I'm not remotely sold on Hurley's temperament vibing with NBA players).

Something to keep an eye on. I don't expect it to happen, but it could trigger some late-season portal madness if it does (since you can enter the portal after the window closes if your coach leaves).

Not sure his style of coaching translates to the NBA. NBA players require a total players coach. The egos can't thrive when the coach is the overbearing Hurley type. Just my opinion. Same for Jim Harbaugh in the NFL. That style can work in college with the players being younger and a bit in awe of the coach. But in the NBA and NFL the players respond much better to a "players" head coach.

100% aligned to everything, except the last line. He’d do fine with the NBA guys—-that family KNOWS basketball and how to coach…..most NBA guys are pros, if you can make them better and help them make more money, they are all in. Dan has a pretty good track record with development and the fact he is snarky, that’s a good thing. He is no George Karl…..

I was under the impression Karl was a pretty apt comparison. If it's more like Thibs or Pop, he'd be totally fine. No arguing the guy can coach, my trepidation on hiring him would be the personality management aspect.

He acts more like Will Wade

I'm not surprised either. He's already a rich man, he's happy, he loves what he's doing. Why change?
And the Lakers organization ain't what it used to be.

It aint what it used to be for sure.

And there's so many factors around Lebron.....

1. Are they 100% taking Bronny?
2. Is Lebron staying with the lakers?
3. Would Lebron "Let" Hurley coach him?

Not to mention, Hurley in general may be better suited in general for coaching College.

Look at Billy Donovan. Was a great coach at Florida..... in the NBA he's had 1 really good year, the rest, his teams were bad... really bad.

The status in being a college coach (especially a national champion college coach) is much higher than being an NBA coach imo. Plus, the Hurley's are fixated on the collegiate sports world. He is at the top and very comfortable in the CBB world. I do think the world of college sports is going to change and for the worst for coaches. But he will have cashed out and be revered as a legend by the time that happens.

Some of you may be familiar with the local Love Day ProAm League that plays each summer. They just announced the rosters yesterday and team Local Legends includes: Khris Lane, Johnny Williams, Marcus Evans, Darius Theus, Mike Gilmore, MSS, Keshawn Curry and Brad Burgess. Mikel Simms and Reggie Williams are also in the league playing for MCA Financial.

Schedules aren't out yet but games will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting June 27th at Varina High School. Free admission!

Smart move by Hurley tbh. The lakers roster is going to change drastically in the near future, probably not for the better. Taking that job now is a one way ticket to searching for a new job in a few years and ending up just another one of those NBA coaches nobody ever really thinks or talks about. Ride this big wave at UConn for as long as you can, maybe even become one of those legendary college coaches if things go well. He’ll have more NBA opportunities if he ends up wanting to take that leap

Yeah, Lakers got an aging star, no picks for the future(and will probably be forced to use one on Bronny), huge tax burden, and tons of pressure/media circus. Western conference is just stacked with Nuggets, Mavs, Wolves, and OKC just a plethora of future greats. Lakers don't really stand a chance, and they offered him less money than Kentucky.

No brainer. Go for a three peat, and try to find a better organization if you want to try your hand at the NBA. He can coach the Knicks in a few years.

I also think if Hurley were to go to NBA.... he'd be better off with a team like the Spurs (once Pop hangs it up). A well run organization, that obviously has aspirations/expectations of winning.... but is not under the spotlight 24/7/365 like The Lakers, Clippers, Celtics.... etc. Where expectations are magnified.

Even during the Spurs doming years with Duncan, Ginobili & Parker..... more people were talking bout the Lakers or Lebron & KD or Carmelo Anthony... or the big 3 in boston with Pierece, Allen & Garnett. And then of course when Lebron went to MIA with Wade & Bosh.
