The VCU commodores got a nod from espn recently. Go commodores!!! I figured at the very least I'd give Bighorn another thread he could run with.

" Virginia Commonwealth
The Commodores also added good size during this late signing period in centers Juvonte Reddic (Winston-Salem, N.C./Quality Education) and Darrell Haley (Palmdale, Calif./Palmdale). Reddic plays with great energy, has great athletic ability and can defend both post positions at 6-9. Haley has an impressive frame (6-10, 230 pounds) with broad shoulders and long arms, but needs to hone his offensive game."

I saw the Commodores play last year at Busch Gardens. They were good but not the same without Lionel Ritchie. In fact I think they only had one original player with them. Maybe these new guys can play and capture/sound more like the original sound. Good Luck Commodores

Got us mixed up with Vanderbilt Commodores-sam ecolors and a good ball club also.

I've long contended that Commodores (or Admirals) would be a better nickname for Old Dominion than the nondescript Monarchs. Commodores suits ODU, adjacent to the Naval Shipyards, much more than land-locked Vandy, Tenn.

There was a time when ODU was a popular landing spot for Navy vets.

In fact, two of the greatest Monarchs ever were Harry Lozon and Dick St. Clair. Both starred for Sonny Allen at ODU after four years of playing for the All-Navy and All-Coast Guard teams.

St. Clair was a 5-9 guard who could dunk. Lozon was a 6-3 forward. They were seniors when eventual NBA guard Dave Twardzik was a freshman ... that group beat VCU, 93-82, at OLD Franklin St. Gym, Dec. 10, '70.

Both St. Clair and Lozon played on the 1967-68 ODU team that averaged 98.2 points per game. That included a 155-110 win over coach Ed Allen's RPI/VCU Rams, Feb. 14, 1968 - the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre."

In that historical outing, ODU's Bob Pritchett had 67 points - most ever by a Rams' opponent. Don Ross had 55 in a losing effort - the most points ever by a Ram.

Since RPI switched the name on its shirts to VCU, the most points by an opponent was Tyronne Marioneaux of Loyola, New Orleans. Marioneaux had 53 points in a 121-99 Loyola win Jan. 24, 1970, on coach Benny Dees' watch.

They could've been the Mariners. But alas, they are the Food Lion Butterflies.

Old Dominion Clippers (they win as often as the Clippers)
Old Dominion Schooners (Blaine's been known to enjoy a Schooner or 3)
Old Dominion Battleships (you sunk my battleship!)
Old Dominion Carriers (somebody caught the Vasilyus, and now is a carrier)
Old Dominion Ferrymen
Old Dominion Armada (which as anyone who's driven 95 south of Richmond knows, is an anagram for Ramada)
Old Dominion Yeoman

Old Dominion Blowmen

Fixed.

They got our name wrong but I'll take the exposure of having the VCU logo to the right of the blurb on us on ESPN.com. I think any kind of exposure is great and while the writer probably should have edited it, it's still great to get some recognition and praise. Go Rams!

Vanderbilt University is named after its benefactor Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. He was called "Commodore" because of his vast holdings in the shipping industry and not because of any naval rank. The sports teams at Vandy are nicknamed the commodores as a result of Vanderbilt, the man, being called "Commodore"

A more apt name for the sports teams at Old Dominion University, which can hardly be compared to that great university in Nashville, Tennessee, might be "Swabbies" or "Cabin Boys". Perhaps if not too demeaning to dock workers they might also be called the "Stevedores".

The students at Ole Domino emanate from checkered pasts and questionable ancestry, usually from some brief drunken encounter between a portside sailor and a woman belonging to the oldest profession in the world. Many an ODU mom has been heard to say "I've gone down on so many sailors I've got gonorrhea of the breath." Therefore mining that vein, a more apt nickname for the ODPoo sports teams might be the "Red Haired Stepchildren" or even the "Bastards". Yes the Old Dominion Bastards has a certain je ne sais qua. It certainly pops when spoken aloud or read off the page.

I can think of many more appropriate sobriquets for the Old Dominion sports teams. Many times these come to me as I am attempting to exit I95 at the Crater Road exit and some yahoo blows through the yield sign. This whole theme might even deserve a thread of its own.

The only Commodores.

The great 70's group.
Vandy at times.
Gulf Coast Community College Ladies Basketball Program.

The rank of Commodore no longer exists in the US Navy. The one star rank, which is also called Brigadier General in the Marines, Army, and Air Force, is now after much confusion during the fifty years after WWII called Rear Admiral (Lower Half).

I guess they do things a little differently in the navy.

Go VCU RAMS

FYI, while the rank of Commodore is no longer used, the title is used. The Commander of a Destroyer Squadron Group is known as a Commodore, though his/her rank is Captain. Captain is an O-6 and is known as a Colonel in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corp. However, a Captain in the Army, Air Force or Marine Corp is known as a Lieutenant in the Navy.

Ah, the Dog Days of summer are fast approaching. Time to set sail, enjoy that cool breeze, a cold beverage of choice and await another great season of Rams Basketball. :D
