Man, this place is getting some big names to come to town in the next couple months. Got to love it.

Alice Cooper
Chevelle
Third Eye Blind
AFI
Social Distortion
GWAR
Atreyu
Brand new
Thrice
Hatebreed
Cannibal Corpse
Megadeth
311
Rise against
The Misfits
Dashboad Confessional
New Found Glory

That's a great list...I'm glad to see the National is bringing in a good product. I wonder if they'll let GWAR do their full show? (you know...projectile fluids and such)

I'm fairly certain GWAR did a new years eve show there last year, and I can't imagine them NOT doing their full show, as long as they promise not to burn the place down.

This venue really is great. One of the best audio setups on the east coast, heck, the stage can be raised/lowered to suit the acoustic needs of the performer.

Does anyone know the capacity there? From the pics, it doesn't seem like it could hold a whole lot more than say, Alley Catz or Canal Club... just looks much more fancy.

Around 1500 i believe. It's smoke free, so that's a bonus, multiple bars. The floor area is sloped so that you're actually able to see over the people in front of you. Top notch all the way around. There's a reason that this place is getting all the big names. If you haven't been, I'd highly recommend it.

Let it be known that 3 of Ram Nation's founding fathers have rocked that stage (in my case softly...with soothing folk melodies)

I used to work with the lead guitarist for GWAR (he now works just at Avalon) and I'm pretty sure the show is the same at the National as it is anywhere else

is that the old Carpenter Center?

Nope, the Carpenter Center just finished being renovated, and had it's new grand opening as the "Richmond CenterStage Carpenter Theatre" last weekend.

While the National is beautiful and I think it's great what they have done there preserving the old while adopting the new, there is a lot more to music than big bands coming through. And personally, I miss the heck out of Toad's Place when it comes to supporting local/regional music. The National leaves everything to be desired in that department. I know Toad's Place is now The Hat Factory, but I wonder what there policy on booking will be. They haven't taken it too seriously yet, what with just a bunch of tribute/cover bands playing, but to their defense, they got a wicked late start on booking.

Like I said, I love that the National is there and they have the potential to be one of the best venues on the Eastern Shoreboard, but in my eyes, the have some serious work to do locally.

Is the Power of 3 playing down there? They (Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White) are playing at the Birchmere in Alexandria on the 28th.

Some of the best Jazz you will ever hear.

It hold a TON more. It blows those places out of the water. Also, a lot of seating for us who don't want to stand the whole time. There's no comparison.

Also, I'm not sure I agree with their claim of one of the best sound systems on the east coast. I went to a show a few months ago, and when a band was performing a song I didn't know, I couldn't tell what was being said. This may have more to do with the type of music, but anyway.

Totally going to see Dashboard and NFG in Dec.

I've always been pleased with it. Ben Folds sounded phenomenal there.

I'm definitely headed to that one as well. Saw them along with Jimmy Eat World back in 99 at Twisters... KILLER show.
