The Official Beat the Saint Louis Billikens in Missouri Thread

I’m with you. Our program is way above average. But our expectations are not aligned with our recents results in March. I don’t wanna reset my expectations lower, but I might have to or get used to falling short of what I once expected. ; )
I'm okay with VCU being not what the program was during the Post F4 / Peak Shaka years. The first two years in the A10 (2012-2013 & 2013-2014) the conference was VERY good and Shaka was killing it from a recruiting POV. Back to back years as NCAA 5 seeds was awesome. If you throw in his last season 2014-2015 VCU received an NCAA 7 seed (would have been closer to 5 with a healthy Bri), then we really had something cooking!

Now the A10 took a step back during Wade's two years (and even MR first year), but Wade's teams received back-to-back NCAA at-large 10 seeds. Year 2 and 4 of MR tenure VCU received at-larges as NCAA 8 seeds and 10 seeds. I know the landscape of college basketball is different, but I don't feel as if it is unreasonable for us fans to ask for VCU to be in consideration for an at-large bid almost every season.

What am I supposed to take from this? That a fan in blue is the only one trying to push his way to the front? Somehow I'm skeptical that Phil's mom is the instigator.
Looks like they're playing rugby or something.

We should have won but Bradford Burgess missed two FTs late. Make either one we win and are sweet 16 bound. Burgess was amazing but hard believe one of the most clutch players we ever had missed those FTs at the end.
Yup, that would have been game over. Happens to the best of them. I remember Earl Monroe doing the same thing against the Knicks in the playoffs early in his career. Missed 'em both.

I would agree that anyone who instigates a fight is but there may be a time where a man has to physically protect his family.
Definitely true, but rarely should it be necessary at a sporting event/venue. Unless it's in Philadelphia, then you better have your head on a swivel.lol

I would like to believe that A10 officials are quietly investigating what happened and will have discussions with both VCU and St. Louis. Like everyone else, I have no idea what started the brawl, but I think it is safe to say that all parties deserve blame. From an optics standpoint, I think St. Louis comes out looking much worse than VCU, being that this happened in their arena. And it doesn't help them that the one guy that stood out the most was the bald headed St. Louis fan ... that guy was completely unhinged.
He was definitely the King of the Knuckleheads.

There's obviously some blame to be put on both parties involved that escalated the situation beyond playful chirping, potentially some blame to whoever overserved people, but the security there should have stepped in much earlier to deescalate imo.

I think you are right. In hindsight, I agree that we did come to play. Heck, we were leading 40-35 with 15 minutes to go. What I think really happened is that the constant misses on offense, combined with SLU's better defensive rebounding got our kids frustrated, and that frustration carried over to the defensive side of the floor. SLU scored 43 points in the last 15 minutes of the game.

I thought our shot selection and offense in the first half was good. We just couldn't get the ball to go in. We had at least 4 threes that went in and out. That's going to happen. Over the last 10-12 minutes of the game, our shot selection was worse and our defense was awful. You could see the frustration on the faces and in the body language of our guys.
We had way too many possessions where only one or two players touched the ball in the half court set. We need to be making at least 8 or 9 threes if we are gonna shoot 30 plus. I thought it was our worst game of the season overall. I'm still puzzled about why Fats doesn't play more when we are struggling from deep.

Yessir, I was a VCU student 88-91 and a Tampa Bay Bucs fan during the Testaverde/Ray Perkins years. I know suffering for a sports fan. However, I do think that the zero NCAA wins in the post-post-Shaka period cited is the root cause of the continued recent major frustration with the trajectory of this program lately.
We won a game vs Oregon State in the tournament when WW was head coach as a 10 seed. Lost to #2 seed Oklahoma in OKC by 4 points in the 2nd round. If Doug Brooks had kept his mouth shut we probably would have been in the Sweet 16. That's our last NCAA win.

It doesn't matter what a parent does

It does matter.

When I take my two young daughters to a game wearing black and gold, I view myself as an extension of VCU. It is my job to set an example of the right way to act. This means being kind to strangers and cheering on your team appropriately. ESPECIALLY when it is an away game where we stick out more and our own are fewer in the stands.

I’ve never trashed anyone’s family on here, only shared some observations without naming anyone specifically. I didn’t say a single word after the game in order to avoid drama. After seeing it twice? Nah, gotta speak up.

It matters how parents act. Whether it is one of us, or a player parent. It matters. To think otherwise is astounding ignorance. It’s just sad. It is obvious you aren’t a parent.

There is no excuse for that behavior on both sides short of actually getting hit without any verbal provocation. Ignoring an idiot goes a long way when they're talking schnit. Everyone in that deal bears responsibility for their choice to be engaged.

We had plenty of good looks especially from 3, but just missed em or we'd have been up 10-15 at the half easy. One of those nights is what I chalk it up to. The guys played a pretty decent game otherwise. They had few turnovers.

I think the Russell family was trying to send a message to the team from the stands. “Look, we are fighting our aS$ off for y’all, show me some d@mn fight on the floor, for God’s sake. Y’all play’n some soft ass ball.”
