Yeah the suns signed another Big and they needed to clear some room on the roster(even though most NBA teams keep 15 the suns keep 14 because sarver's cheap.

Here's the thrust of it from DHD

If they assign him they would still have to pay him his contract. If they release him, I believe they still own his rights so if he is not picked up by another NBA team and chooses to play in the D League he will have to play for their affiliate the Iowa Energy. He then will be paid a lot less money.
