The Official Smash the Richmond Spiders in the Stu Thread

Didn't every one of the Rams out there score? Everyone got a bite of roasted spydurr, right?

That wasn't the first time fur did that after beating VCU. They did the same thing in the Stu their last year in the CAA (2000-01) as they were not eligible to participate in the CAA Tournament and won the regular season. John Beilein was the fur coach then.
To be clear, last season, we cut down the nets at the Robins center after beating St Joe. Not after VCU…

Before that 23-7 last season, Since then 5-18 vs D1…

The success of UR only helps VCU and vice versa. It creates exposure and excitement for college basketball in the City of Richmond. This has been a top quality rivalry for the past 4 decades and if UR has to downgrade because of NIL thats really a sad thing for all of college basketball. UR has great history and has always been what is right about college basketball. So trashing them from a VCU fans makes zero sense. They help us and we help them.
First what’s going on with this forum lately? Last week we can’t say hate this week we can’t gently rib our bitter crosstown rivals.

I don’t know if the “trashing them from a VCU fan” bit was directed at me BUT in my post I was making fun of them losing to us so regularly as our rival. I wasn’t trashing their basketball program.

In the post I say I think moving to the Patriot League is a boneheaded move precisely because the Spiders have proven to be good recently like winning the league last year and the conference tourney the year before.

I agree with you 100% this rivalry helps both programs. It brings the attention of the basketball world to little ol RVA twice a year. Usually it’s nationally televised on the ESPN networks which brings casual eyeballs to VCU basketball. It would suck if we lost the rivalry. Which is why I don’t understand them wanting to move to the Patriot League.

Also didn’t UR win the A10 just last year and win the autobid the previous year? Aren’t those the first two years of NIL? If anything it appears UR has gotten better since the NIL. At least with the small sample size we have.

Was just able to watch the game, thanks Chill, and all I could think was I’d trade 5 of those made threes for misses vs SLU. Then we win at SLU and still squish the bugs by 25. At times this really looked like a college team playing a high school team. There was that much difference in talent, execution and coaching. I know the bugs are bad, still, the VCU team that played yesterday can do some damage in the NCAA tournament. Let’s go VCURams!

NIL has exponentially changed this year. You have to continually come up with millions each year and it has really caught up to a lot of teams this year. From URs perspective I think they’re making an executive decision that they’re an academic first school and that level of investment in basketball is not where they want to allocate that level of capital. I understand it. I’ve followed VCU and UR hoops since the mid 80s. ECAC conference Sun Belt Metro CAA. RTD Invitational. Super Hoops sponsored by Richfood at the Coliseum. So many amazing memories. Im just sad to see it change so drastically. I get it you gotta evolve and adapt to the times. It just doesn’t seem like a better product or as good as competition. There’s no loyalty, these guys can leave whenever they want and chase more $ or more playing time.

I'm not a spider hater...I feel bad for the fanbase...
