the season

As it stands is:

A dissapointment - 20 wins is certainly positive, certainly something our team should have accomplished....but we didn't accomplish more than we were supposed to. Smart gets a bye since he just came on board this year and we accomplished just what we were supposed to accomplish. accomplishing only what we were supposed to accomplish is not sussessfull imo. We must do better next season.

.................THIS TEAM MUST, 1. BE ABLE TO KEEP A LEAD; 2. MUST BE ABLE TO WIN ON THE ROAD.

We have tournament starting next friday that determines if this season a disappointment. Until then I'm holding judgment.

Besides the fact that you are withholding judgment, and not just holding it, very well put.

What a difference a year and a half makes! Rambo Rowdy is growing up to be a competent fan! ;)

me too

Likewise, I would not say that the season has been a total disappointment. However, I would like to point out some differences between last year and this year. Last year, we were conference champions and this year we are a 5th seed. Quite a drop. We did have some nice out of conference wins. We returned four starters, with an untested coach. Grant commanded a presence and was unflappable. At times, Shaka looked like a little kid, trying to find his way. Give him credit for his recruitment effort. We discovered that Joey was an adequate replacement for Eric. Larry has been inconsistent and we never know which one will show up. Krill was a starter and played very spotty this year. There were some match up problems for him. TJ is undersized, but played with a lot of heart and hustle. Skeen never did live up to his billings. Three point shooting by 2 and 3 positions was OK. Overall something was missing perhaps leadership on and off the floor. Hopefully we can redeem ourselves during the tournament.

I disagree completely. Just because Shaka has different ways of coaching and a different personality than AG doesn't mean that he looks like a little kid. I would agree that sometimes this season he has been learning as he goes, but that's a natural step for a first year coach

We discovered that Joey was an adequate replacement for Eric.

These two statements are a contradiction. Now, sometimes we did have a lack of "A scorer" on the floor, but every team who doesn't have a natural scorer (Eric Maynor, John Wall, etc.) can have that problem at times.

Skeen never did live up to his billings.
This is way off IMO. The team has often times struggled feeding the paint and trying to establish the "pound it in" style that we could thrive on. This might be due to the fact that Lary is hanging out 20 feet outside the basket, it might because we are a shooting team. When Jamie has gotten the ball in the paint he attacks the basket, and his work ethic in the paint is unheralded.

Banana, We all have our opinions. In loses to NU, Shaka looked lost. Something was missing. Skeen was hyped as a beast and the best player on the team...... Perhaps Shaka did not utlized him properly.

I agree, we all have our opinions, and I wasn't calling yours out, just stating mine in response.

To Skeens credit they completely changed him from the player he was at WF. Although I wished we passed him the ball more in the paint.

I think the amount of hype he received was somewhat unrealistic, but that tends to happen with transfers because you have so long to discuss them before they actually play in a game. I think he has done a good job for us this season. You can't measure his success by message board hype. To his credit he went almost 2 years without playing in a game and as Merc said he is being asked to play a completely different role here at VCU. At Wake he shot the three to open up the inside game for the bigs, at VCU he is on the opposite side of that. I think the staff has used him properly. At Wake over half of his shots were from behind the arch. We have plenty of other guys to shoot the three. He can do more for us in the paint then behind the arch.

could we maybe get a merging of the handful of my-opinion-of-THE-SEASON threads?

...not that they aren't all worthy or anything, just that they're all on the same basic topic (hence, all using "season" in their titles)
