VCU/ODU: The Rivalry Is Just Different…

Old Dominion and VCU rejoined the battle today in Norfolk at 4:00pm, typically with a shot at first place in the conference on the line.

New fans may not fully understand the depth and length of the rivalry, which spans more than 30 years, two conferences and 82 games. VCU leads the series 42-40. The teams have split six CAA tournament games and knocked each other out of the past two CAA tournaments.

It’s a bizarre association that extends off the playing floor and into the coaching ranks. Eddie Webb was an assistant at VCU for 10 seasons. His father is Paul Webb, who won 196 games at Old Dominion. Jeff Capel ushered in a basketball revival at VCU. The younger Capel was an assistant on the ODU bench prior to landing the VCU job, and his father coached ODU to its 1995 NCAA tournament victory over Villanova.

It’s different when these two get together. Even former players understand that when these two teams get together, it’s different. “It was always a knock-down drag-out,” recalls Rodney Ashby, who played at VCU in the early 1990s. “We knew as players our fans took ODU, by far and away, more seriously than Richmond. The fans are a huge part of it. They just do not get along. At all. You see the venom that our fans and boosters have for ODU and it translates to the team and how you play.”

Love it all. I love jawing with Monarch fans. I love the feeling you get for the week or so (and esp. the couple of hours) before the game. Love the competition. It is just awesome the amount of hatred that is on display between the two sides.

What is better than beating ODU at the TED?

Having Big Blue Room tickets for after the game... :D :o

It was a proud moment, being able to walk through the room with my head high. Go Rams.

I've always wondered how the coaches and players (older players - juniors and seniors) who understand the rivalry feel about this game. They all say, "It is just our next game and that is how we look at it." Of course, the fans go all rabid before and during the game....obviously the players and coaches don't have that luxury or they would blow the game. But I do wonder if the players and coaches get more excited by the win....or upset/depressed at a loss as compared to other CAA games they play.

What I do know is that the fans "feel" the win or loss for days, weeks, months, and/or even years after. No other game compares to a VCU vs ODU game. You will either be totally elated or utterly depressed after the game.

God how I hate ODU

Beating ODU in a NCAA post-season tournament!

VCU is now 4-5 in games played at the Ted. VCU has outscored ODU by an average of 71-70 during those games despite winning 1 less game. Ironically, the only time we have really been blown out at the Ted was in the Duke year....

2011 VCU 59 ODU 50
2010 ODU 73 VCU 70
2009 ODU 69 VCU 65
2008 VCU 78 ODU 68
2007 ODU 79 VCU 63
2006 ODU 78 VCU 75
2005 ODU 82 VCU 76
2004 VCU 84 ODU 67
2003 VCU 72 ODU 69

I wonder if during the coaching staff's pre-game strategy meetings preparing for ODU if they ask each other, "How will Blaine Taylor screw up this game with his coaching?" Hassell only plays 30 minutes against a weak rebounding team and is not in foul trouble. Cooper only plays 26 minutes and is not in foul trouble. Iliadis gets the hot hand in the first half from 3 point land and the Blainiac takes him out of the game. He ends up only playing 14 minutes. Taylor substitutes like it's a rec league and everyone is required "x" amount of playing time. He has done that ever since he got to ODU. He will not keep his studs on the floor. I love the fact that Blaine Taylor is their coach. I hope he stays for another ten years!

Just look at Shaka's reaction after the game, big grin on his face as he hugged Joey while Blaine was standing waiting to shake hands. Shaka made his way through the line and then walked over and pointed at the crowd, pumped his fists, and applauded our efforts, all with that same big grin on his face. Tells you that this was certainly much more than 1 game!

(The Foul) That was the game where I had to be restrained. I have since never gotten out of control. I was embarrassed because of my actions that day, but who can blame me. Anyway i'll never get that way again.

Just one more chapter in this great rivalry. We will remember and talk about this one for a long time. Most ODU fans recognize this as their signature rivalry. I mean they would have to be "Blaine" dead not to.

Had several good laughs reading the ODU boards prior to the game when Burger Boy, aka Agent Zero, Hibachi and other assorted nom du plumes he has used, was saying that VCU wasn't ODU's chief rival. Hahahahahahahaha! What an imbecile!
