In the past two years, VCU has lost two NBA Draft first round picks and two of the best players in VCU history. But the Rams have to move on from the days of Eric Maynor and Larry Sanders. They have a very experienced team this season, a team that can compete for the CAA title and an appearance in the NCAA tournament. But they can't rely on only one player like they've been able to do for the past few years. Instead, it's going to have to be more of a team effort. But the Rams still do have a star in senior point guard Joey Rodriguez.

...

Shaka Smart is one of the youngest head coaches in the country but his team will be one of the most experienced. Rodriguez isn't the same talent as Maynor and Sanders, but he is one of the best point guards in college basketball. It is yet to be seen if he can carry a team, though. And even if Rodriguez can carry the team, he still needs help from the supporting cast if the Rams are going to win the CAA.

They don't really go over our recruiting class at all except for saying that Juvonte Reddic is probably the best recruit in the CAA this year. They say him and Skeen will be the primary options. Toby will start alongside Skeen right now.

For reference, here are some of the teams ranked after us:

#47 Texas A&M
#48 Dayton
#49 Rhode Island
#50 Arizona
#51 Mississippi State

Noticed GMU was listed at #61 in the same poll. They should be good too. I posted GMU's on CAAZone. Wonder if ODU will be ahead of us.

Someone else should post VCU's.

Don't care about what anyone there thinks.

It is interesting to note that Wake Forest is #62 on this list.

I'm not a Joey basher (at least not since about half way through last season) but is he one of the best point guards in the country? I am very happy he came back last year and it leading our team this year but that is a big statement to live up to. I hope he plays great but if he is one of the best pg's in the country we should see him in next year's draft...

Success at one level does not mean success at the next. Joey may well be one of the better college PG's but he also lacks some of the traits of the prototypical NBA point guard.

This is not to suggest that he cant make it in the NBA.

Again, success at one level doesn't necessarily translate into success at the next. Case in point JJ Reddick and/or Laetner of Duke both were clearly the best college player their senior year. However, both are mediocre pro's at best.

His stats seem to say that he is certainly one of the best point guards in the nation. I would say top 20 or so. That statement doesn't mean he would need to be drafted for it to be true. Plenty of excellent college point guards don't ever sniff the NBA draft.

Case in point, here are a number of very good (even elite) points who didn't get drafted just this past year:

Sherron Collins- Kansas (AP 1st team All-American)
Jerome Randle- California (PAC-10 POY)
Mikhail Torrance- Alabama
Scottie Reynolds- Villanova (AP 1st team All-American)
Jon Scheyer (starting point for the National Champions, 2nd team All-American)

Considering there are 2 first-team All-Americans and the starting point guard for the national champions on this list I gotta say that being in the draft is not indicative of whether you are among the best point guards nationally. It only means that you are one of the best points whose game translates to the NBA.

#52 - UConn - What's up Jeremy Lamb?
#54 - NC State
#55 - Louisville
#56 - Clemson
#57 - FSU
#61 - GMU
#62 - Wake Forest

NC State at #54 will look like a mistake at the end of the year. They will finish in the top 5 in the ACC this year.

I sure hope. Last statement is bold.

I don't care what ODU is ranked; we'll take care of them.

1 spot difference between us, is anyone surprised?
