Every year there are a few players who shock us by jumping up draft boards. It’s still early, and the balls haven’t even started bouncing, but in this slideshow we take a look at the top seven players who are currently not projected in the lottery who could end up there.

Larry Sanders – Forward/Center, VCU
Current TRW Mock Position: 17

Currently on the fringe of the lottery, Larry Sanders will have the opportunity to move up a few spots in individual workouts. Scouts and GMs think his potential has yet to be tapped into, but his disappearing for stretches this season raised cause for concern.

Still very raw offensively, Sanders can already block shots from the weak-side at an NBA level. He has a frame that can add substantial weight to develop into a hybrid power forward / center.

Ya, watching the NFL draft today made me realize a lot of players made mistakes declaring early for the draft. I know there is no way Larry goes undrafted but I am sure he will be disappointed if he doesn't go somewhere in the first round.

I think the play of Serge Ibaka and the difference he makes for OKC with his athleticism and defensive presence can only help Larry's stock this draft. The longer the Thunder go the better it is for Larry imo.

I love college basketball, but have never really watched pro until this year and still only watch "Maynorball".

Someone explain Lottery vs 1st round? are they the same? What are we talking in $$$$ and contract?

PS can someone fix the post times that hour off is throwing me :D

The lottery is the first 14 picks of the first round. All of the teams that didn't make the playoffs are given a chance to get one of the top 3 picks in the draft based on a lottery. I am not sure what the actual percentages are, but the last place team has a much higher chance of getting one of those picks (like 20%) than the highest of the non playoff teams (like .1%) but all in theory have a shot at it. So when someone talks about being picked in the lottery they are talking about the first 14 picks, and the first round would be one of the first 30 picks. It is important to be picked in the first round rather than the second because first round picks get a guaranteed two year contract for a set amount based on how high they are picked. Maynor was a number 20 pick and I think he is getting around 1.3 million each year. The #1 pick earns around 2.5 mil per year.

You have to take care of the time yourself. I kept waiting for that to change before and it never did. Click on User Control Panel, then Board Preferences, then select DST in effect.

That number for the top of the draft is way off. The number 1 pick this year got 4,983,480. In addition to the 2 guaranteed years there are also 2 option years held by the team, which 85% of the time at least 1 option is picked up on 1st rounders. I believe Joe Alexander if the highest pick I can remember not getting his 3rd year option picked up being the 8th pick 2 years ago.

From: http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9302

Code:
Pick 1st Yr 2nd Yr 3rd Year (Opt) 4th Year (Opt): 5th Year (Opt)

1 4,286,900 4,608,400 4,929,900 26.1% 30.0%
...
14 1,519,400 1,633,300 1,747,300 48.1% 39.1%
...
30 850,800 914,600 978,400 80.5% 50.0%

not sure those numbers still apply if u look at the date it was last updated being July 20, 2008.

Looks accurate according to the players association: http://www.nbpa.org/sites/default/files/EXHIBIT%20B.pdf

Larry's a lock for the first round. He has the right agent (Andre Buck) on his team and that with Larry's intangibles are what will ensure that he remains a first round pick. A buddy of mine is an agent (albeit on a small scale mostly basketball guys to Europe). He is high on Buck and also says Larry is a first round lock who could move up if he works-out well.

As most reports state, the scouts really like his athleticism, and body. I guess offensive polish isn't needed. Oh yeah, Ben Wallace, Dennis Rodman, Theo Ratliff all seem to do or have done well without the ability to hit the barn from the inside.

I love Larry but must admit like most, I do not see an NBA first round ready guy. However, scouts and NBA teams seem to think so.
