That team is not as bad as their record. They were given a brutal start to the conference with probably all the top 5/6 teams in the conference so far. Combine that with a lot of youth and inexperience and it's easy to see how they are winless in CAA play. Although we led pretty much the whole game, I can't say I was ever really confident we would put them away. They were pesky up until the final buzzer sounded. They have some really good 3 point shooters and Harris is very good in the open floor. Harris is undersized but a very athletic guard. They have the tools to be CAA contenders again in the next year or 2. I hope no one is beating their chest over beating these guys though, if anything we probably should have beaten them by more considering how young they are. These guys will be tough for the foreseeable future and I don't think we can count on easy wins in the future. Coen's doing his thing there.

I tend to think that NU is a bad matchup for us in general. We probably will never really blow them out since Coen runs a very tight ship there. His system drives us nuts in general. I am glad we won't be seeing Chaisson Allen again though at the Stu. That kid is a stud and scored 16 with our guys hanging all over him. NU did a great job setting screens to open up their 3-point shooters and they stroked it really well all game. 56% on the road is very good shooting. I'm glad we pulled it out.

This VCU team is not the dominant VCU team we've had in the past, but we're sitting nicely at 5-1 in conference with our 3rd leading scorer out in Brandon and Toby Veal sitting on the sidelines. Rob and DJ gave us good minutes today. That one sequence where DJ was cleaning up the boards and owning the paint was very nice to see. Juvonte looked a little lost out there and I anticipate that will happen with some of the bigger teams in the league (like Northeastern). Rob got plenty of nice 3-point looks that didn't fall for him, that's how it is for most freshmen. Apart from that though, he undeniably has a big effect on the game as well as the flow of the offense. I found myself thinking that we need Rob most times he was on the bench. He brings some intangibles to the game that you can't teach. That 3-point play was probably the biggest of the game and it's great to see a freshman with the willingness and ability to make that play.

For those of us that might be getting our heads too high in the clouds, a word of caution. We have had a pretty easy first 1/3 of the CAA slate and this record was to be expected if we are truly a good team. In fact losing at Georgia St. was a bad loss that we should have won, but those games happen in the CAA. The latter part of our schedule is going to be where we really earn our stripes and find out if we are a good team or not. I'm reminded of the George Mason team of last year that went 10-1 or something like that with as cupcake a CAA schedule a team in this league could receive. They started playing the CAA top-dogs and tanked from there on out. I'm not saying that we will do the same, but we should understand we are simply beating teams we should beat, and in one case we didn't. We're going to have to do more than that if we want to go dancing.

At the end of the day, a W is a W. I'll take it. Props to Northeastern on some gutsy play and great shooting (esp. from 3) and I'm happy that we've gotten that monkey off our backs and finally beaten them.

Thanks DB. I was unable to attend the game today because of a long meeting (although Mrs V. and the boys were in attendance), came home and turned to ramnation for some insight and your analysis was exactly what I wanted.

NU isn't a bad tema and they shot well against tough defense. Kudos to them for making the shots. We handled it ok let them back into it a bit but they made tough shots...
On to Ga State on Wednesday...need to pack the Stu...GSU giving GMU all they can handle at the Patsy Center

A few notes and thoughts from an NU perspective. You guys got off to a great start today and burgess/skeen were way too much for us to handle. Burgess in particular impressed me with his all around play. Your bigs got to the line consistently and nailed the 2nd chance points when you got them. I know shaka's gotten a lot of criticism lately but he coached a great game. One thing I'm curious about is why he didn't press MORE. Esp when chase went out.

Honestly it bothers me that we haven't won a game in conference yet. However we're obviously really young. Lee Harris and Smith are all going to be difference makers for us and that Harris put back was something he's attempted but hadn't hit in game yet so that excites me. Pierson is going to become a pretty proficient scorer in league although he really didn't get a chance to show it today because of how many 3's we attempted. DB I'd note we really don't have much true size. Dinko's a liability defensively and at times we go small with a 4 guard lineup. We simply aren't a very good rebounding team a troubling trend in the Coen era.

Solid game today guys, I look forward to the rematch in the CAA tournament..

I thought simply having that much size is a nice luxury. All your bigs are pretty young (Dino, Bates, Pierson, Black etc.). That's with Vinny Lima out. I will say that your bigs are inexperienced, but you had plenty of size. Most Coen-coached teams do. It's just a matter of them learning the game and getting more comfortable. Being able to shuffle in bigs with that size is invaluable. I think it bothered our freshman Reddic to an extent. That's a credit to the depth you guys have in the front. They'll only get better as they mature. I agree that Pierson will be a good one and he has a nice touch on that 15 foot jumper from the free throw area. He's got a good body for a freshman and a bright future ahead of him.

NU is a very tough minded team. Always have been. Give it up to them for making shots in the 2nd half. They shot the ball as well as they have all year and most of them were tough contested shots. Nothing you can do about that. They had some success off setting those ballscreens and getting open for the 3. Great game today by Skeen, Bradford, and Ed. Proud of our guys coming up with some big defensive stops and outreboudning NU and fighting through some horrible calls. Yes, I know we got the foul number to go our way but the officials were very inconsistent. Coach was working the refs to day hahaha. Yes, you can say that we should have beaten them by more or whatever but NU played really well and won't go the entire conference season without a win. Onto GSU....REVENGE!!!

Redsox: You said you will see us again in the CAA tournament. I believe we play you at your place on Wednesday, February 2. At least, I have plans on flying up to Boston for that game! And I don't look forward to it. You have a well coached team and a most difficult CAA schedule in January.

whoops forgot about the unbalanced schedule for a moment. Yeah we could streak through feb with the schedule we have.

I'll add this...

While I love that we're 5-1 and .5 back (waiting on the HU/ODU game), put it in perspective. I still think we aren't as good as many of you believe we are. Look at the combined CAA records of our opponents in the 5 wins:

W&M 0-5 (Won Home and Away) (.5 game out of last)
NU 0-6 (Won at Home) (last)
Drexel 3-2 (Won at Home) (tied for 5th)
UNCW 3-2 (Won Away) (tied for 5th)

Our wins are against teams with a combined 6-15 CAA record. So, while it is certainly better than being 1-5, I hope we're learning while we're winning and not thinking we're good enough right now. Our best win so far is Drexel, which we got very lucky to win at home (thanks Bru). Plenty of room for improvement. DO WORK RAMS!

Yeah but we aren't as bad as people were saying a few weeks ago. For 4 games in a row now I'd say we've really kept our (crap) together and Northeastern gave us a scare because they were doing awesome, not because we had a meltdown. Their record def doesn't reflect their quality, because they are by no means a bad team. I'm so glad we finally beat them here at home tho. This has been a nice season for getting revenge (Wake, UCLA, Northeastern), hopefully we can get some sweet SWEET revenge against ODU in the CAA tourney.

That is a tough one: beat ODU in their own place or beat them in the tourney? I'll take both 8-)

Now comes the meat of the conference with the "winning" teams ahead. We have beat the bottom dwellers for the most part and now have to step our defense and offense even more. Not to take anything away from UNCW, WM, NE or Drexel who we all know can play with the best in this league. Huge challenges in front of us and we need to stay focused, sharp and injury free. Go Rams!

I saw a lot of positives on the floor today.

First of all, NE always plays us tough and Bill Cohen is a solid coach. I thought the rebounding was great, especially the offensive glass in the first half. Nixon's two three's in the second half were huge. Joey hits his free throws down the stretch. I thought our defense, save a lapse in the second half, was really good. Bradford was REALLY active. A couple of Theus' drives/dishes in the paint were sweet. Very solid team win. Kudos.

NE is going to being a challenge in the future as their guys mature. Glad the PG is graduating.
