From Coach Smart via Twitter: "It's a tie between Brandon Rozzell and Ed Nixon. Keep it up fellas!"

I assume he's referring to the starting SG spot?

From what everybody is hearing noway Gavin doesnt start at SG..maybe he means for the backup spot

Maybe they had a dunk contest lol

i'm not sure which is worse, the thought of ed nixon as our starting shooting guard, or the fact that our coach might actually be relaying practice competition updates over twitter.

ahh you gotta read the full tweet

One week until class and workouts begin! The team had a productive summer. Hardest Worker of the Summer award goes to .It's a tie between Brandon Rozzell and Ed Nixon. Keep it up fellas!33 minutes ago from txt

Looks like he exceeded the character limit and it got broken into two tweets

Can't wait for classes and the workouts to begin. Hopefully we'll start to get some more information about the team flowing into the forum.

Yeah, that does make sense, though I'm not sure why I didn't get the other portion of the tweet. Guess I need to check twitter.com in the future.

What is so bad about Ed Nixon starting? The guy is 6-4 plus and is arguably the best pure athlete on the team (maybe Skeen gets that nod now). He is great on defense and especially at the front of a press. He rebounds well. He works very hard (as evidenced by the tweet!) and we have no drama/trouble from him like we have some of our other players. His area for improvement has been finishing in traffic and extending his shooting range. I assume he is going to be improved in those areas headed into his upperclassmen years. Finally, I've met him a couple of times and he seems to be a great young man.

I would take that potentially over a SG (Gavin) that seems to be a great 3 ball shooter, but has never played a minute in VCU uniform, has limited athleticism and ball handling for his size/position and by most accounts is not a great rebounder or defender.

The SG spot could go as easily to Rozzell or Nixon as it could to Gavin. Nixon might get more time at the #3 spot though. That would put him closer to the basket and use his athleticism on the baseline.

I don't dislike any of our players and none of them are perfect, but this fanbase seems to sometimes have it in for Ed. I hope he has a great season.

The only complaint anybody should have with Ed is that he can't finish if his life depended on it and his shooting needs work. He is probably our best man defender

I'm sure he is a great guy but that doesn't win games

i don't dislike anyone either, and i'm sure ed is a really nice kid. i don't think it's that anyone has it in for him so much as that we want to see this team win basketball games. i think ed nixon absolutely has a role on this team, and that is to provide a defensive spark off the bench. this season, i believe we need to have a better pure shooter and scorer start at SG.

hopefully nixon has improved his jump shot, and can find a way finish near the basket. i will be rooting for him as hard as anyone. if those things happen, he could start, but i'll believe it when i see it.

I hope Ed added strength in the off season. That should help him finish through traffic. We will really need someone to step up and fill that slasher/driver role now that Eric is gone. Ed is the only proven guy we have to do it. I would argue that role is the biggest question mark (be sides coaching style) for the start of the season. We need someone who can draw the defense and cause breakdowns in half court defense, and right now I can't see who that play maker will be.

It is trully great to see that these guys are working hard to better their skills. :ugeek: :ugeek: :ugeek:

Dont forget about TJ. TJ drives/slashes very well, but much like Ed, he's got to improve on his "finishing" skills.

Both TJ and Ed are going to need to be slahing hard and often to the basket, past their defender, and either finish with a lay-up, floater (oh Eric, how I'll miss that), or in the chance that their big man slides over for some "help D", scoop the ball to Larry for one of those emphatic, floor rattling dunks. To see what I'm talking about, take a look at the RN video podcast from the CAA semi-final and championship game from last March. We executed these types of plays extrememly well especially in the championship

Brandon started adding a pretty nice teardrop/floater towards the end of the season as well. Looked very much like Eric had been coaching him on it.
