Since it seems that the KU board mods are on vacation or sleeping in or whatever (the phog.net board requires "mod approval" for all new registers, which is why I haven't been able to set the record straight on there about a few things that they are throwing out about us and our team), I felt it would be beneficial to post this here. Perhaps stickied up until tip-off tomorrow morning.
First and foremost, welcome to VCU RamNation. We hope you enjoy your stay.
Secondly, we earned our place in the Elite Eight as much as anyone else who made it this far. To say that we are undeserving is petty and ignorant. You could make a case that we did not deserve to be selected for an at-large, but that argument should have died two weeks ago. Since then, we have beaten four quality teams, three of them by at least 13 points.
Moving on to debunk a few common misperceptions:
- We are not just "happy to be here". We are enjoying the experience of reaching the second weekend of the tournament, but make no mistake our players will be playing to win the game.
- We have players who can get to the rim if need be. Camping out on the perimeter will not automatically cripple our offense (as Purdue found out).
- Some of us here say your fans are "arrogant" based on the evidence we have seen on your boards. I for one would have thought fans a team that lost in the second round to Northern Iowa would know better than to underestimate a senior-led team from a mid-major conference that plays an "unconventional" brand of basketball. That's no disrespect to KU, but it is what it is. KU is pretty much the poster-child of teams getting upset in the dance by schools from smaller conferences.
- We are not a small school. In fact, our enrollment is larger than KU's.
- Please do not confuse us with Virginia State. VSU is located in Petersburg and plays in D-II.
- We do not care about the University of Richmond. I for one was not rooting for them. I wanted KU to win so that our players could have the opportunity to play against one of the truly great teams in the country this season, and now that they have that opportunity, I am excited at the prospect.
- Our fans chant "we want Kansas" because we actually want to play against Kansas. The thing about mid-majors is that they rarely have opportunities to play against teams of that high caliber. So what if we lose? We aren't going to lose any sleep about losing a game in which we were 11 point underdogs when many of the talking heads on ESPN and elsewhere questioned if we even passed the "laugh test" on Selection Sunday. And that fact about not being able to play against top-caliber teams? If we extend an invitation to coach Bill Self for a home-and-home series with VCU after this season, my money is on him turning down the offer. That's just how it works in college basketball.
The great thing about this game from our perspective is that we have absolutely nothing to lose. Our team is ready and rearing to go against the last remaining 1-seed in the tournament. We truly are underdogs in every sense of the word, and that is when we perform at our best. We were Vegas underdogs in every single game we have played in the NCAA Tournament thus far, so it won't be unfamiliar territory by any means. We'll have our work cut out for us, but if you think this game will just be a 40-minute formality, then you are sorely mistaken.
Also tell your players not to tweet smack about us before the game. Ask George Mason how that ended up working out for them.
