Toby Veal (much needed positive news)

If we have all bigs who will bring the ball up the court?
This thread is stupid. Ya'll are like an incurable disease.

Well, Shaka needs to sign at least a couple bigs with very good ball handling skills. It's a must.

Re: Toby Veal (not so good news)

The Northwest Florida State College men’s basketball team has won a Panhandle Conference championship.

Veal scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds before injuring his knee with 2:35 left in the first half. Veal was helped off the floor and didn’t return. He was replaced by Michael Robertson, who Stewart commended.

I never get excited about the Panhandle Conference except for Gulf Coast C.C.'s Women's basketball team. Weak basketball on the Men's side. Bruce Stewart the HC for NFCC was a head coach for MTSU. As far as state championships go, the Panhandle Conference never competes.

I think what some people are saying is that we've become accustomed to having a long, athletic 6-10 guy that can change the game defensively with his length and they'd like to see the team try to replace this element somewhat when Larry leaves. It would be silly to argue that having this length has not made a big difference in the performance of the team over the last 3 years.

To pull in a guy that's 6-7 doesn't exactly provide that element of length. And on the surface it looks a little desperate to bring in a guy who is basically a journeyman (we'd be his 3rd program in 3 years), is not exactly that big for a big guy, and has only 2 years of eligibility left. So, while I am happy we seem to have gotten a good player in Veal, there's not as much upside as a 4 year recruit.

I am also in the camp of signing a long, wiry, athletic big guy if we can. With JRod, Nixon, Rozzell, Theus, Daniels, Grayson and Brandenburg next year we have plenty of guards. Still, there are many ways to win in the CAA - - when we beat Duke we had a phantom inside game at best. No need to get too freaked out about the recruiting of big guys either way.

So you would be more comforted if he sat out a year? Then we'd start hearing about him being rusty.

Not sure how this looks a little desperate. If it were August and we brought him in, maybe. But at this point in the recruiting cycle I assume this is a guy who was an available big who the staff thought could help the program. Plus VCU had previously recruited him so he was familar with the program.

Troy Godwin was 6'6", but he had a good wing span (and just a big span in general), and could definitely alter play inside the post.

I look at Toby as our replacement for KP's skill set rather than Larry's. He doesn't have to be extremely long, just hopefully tough as nails. Reco for TJ and Rob for Jay. If Larry leaves we don't have that guy yet. Hopefully this knee injury is not serious and doesn't prevent Toby from becoming a Ram.

Speaking of 6'7" big men who transferred into our program from a BCS program - look no further than the first row of Section 24 at most Ram home games, and you will see Wil Fameni. He was and is a 6'7" big man with a solid post skill set who could create alot of room under the basket and put up good numbers in the CAA (8.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg his jr year - the "we beat Duke" year, before injuries limited him his sr year). Not to say Toby will replace Larry's role as stated in other posts, but he will be a big help to sure up the inside with T, Skeen, and (hopefully) a solid freshman big.

GUYS YOU JUST DON'T GET IT THE BASKETBALL EXPERTS ON THIS BOARD HAVE TOLD US THAT IF WE DON'T SIGN A PLAYER 7'3" OR TALLER WE WILL INSTANTLY BECOME IRRELEVANT OMG OMG OMG

Not at all. But the addition of at least one solid low post presence for the future would go a long way.

If we could just sign some like Spam Harris & who could play well in practices - we would be king of the CAA.
