We wrote yesterday that interim UNC Wilmington coach Brooks Lee will be considered when the UNCW administration makes its head coaching decision after the season. Lee could help himself a lot if the Seahawks were to win a game or two in the CAA tournament. However, with an injury to a key Seahawk, the possibility of advancing appears unlikely.

Junior forward John Fields -- UNCW's leading rebounder at 8.7 rpg -- will miss the first-round game against Towson due to the lingering effects of a dislocated kneecap.

The CAA tournament begins on Friday.

As this situation develops, we will continue to keep you updated.

UNCW coaching candidates
Joe Dooley, Kansas asst. - Former head man at East Carolina knows the area.
Russell Springmann, Texas asst. - Super-recruiter brought Durant, Abrams, and D. James to Austin.
Mike Lonergan, Vermont head coach - '07 AEC coach of the year has won nearly 100 games in five seasons.
Pat Kelsey, Xavier asst. - Rising star is just 34. *cough*pastner*cough, cough*
Billy Lee, interim - Interim, translated from the original Sanskrit as "rent, don't buy".

You can cross Dooley and Brooks Lee off the list. Some good sources have confirmed that Dooley has no interest in the job, and Lee will be lucky to remain on the UNCW staff next season, let alone be a head coach candidate.

The new coach might not even be a name on that short list Brian Mull provided. I recently found out that former coach Jerry Wainwright has moved back to Brunswick County (NC) since getting fired from DePaul, and may be in the running for the job. Since he has every possibly NCAA basketball connection you could ask for and knows what it takes to rebuild things at UNCW, he'd provide us with the stability we'd need while at the same time mentoring the future coach, one of his groomed assistants.

In addition, Texas assistant Rodney Terry (who used to work under Wainwright at UNCW) has already expressed interest in the job, and would be a great "safety" option.

Terry would be a good coach for the Dub in my opinion. Wainwright would bring buzz back to the Trask and get the fans and boosters interested in the program in the short term until the next coach takes over. I think that's a good plan.

We need the Dub to get back to being in the upper echelon of teams. It's no fun watching you guys flounder at the bottom of the league anymore.

The Seahawks opened the CAA tournament yesterday at noon against the Towson Tigers, a team they split with during the regular season. They lost handily to the Maryland school, allowing the CAA also-ran to score 52 first-half points. This loss should put the UNCW coaching carousel into full motion.

The poor showing by the Seahawks over the past two months makes interim coach Billy Lee a very unlikely hire. It may not be fair, but his name is not likely to sit well with the fan base, who will want to attach some excitement to the moribund program.

With most of UNCW's candidates planning to make deep NCAA runs, an immediate announcement might be too much to expect, but one candidate could be available as early as this weekend, if Wilmington is looking to make an immediate splash. Mike Lonergan's Vermont Catamounts begin AEC tournament play today against UMBC, and if they don't advance to the final, UNCW might just give him a call.

As this situation develops, we will continue to keep you updated.

Former coach: Benny Moss (fired)
Interim coach: Brooks Lee

Potential UNCW Coach Candidates:
Billy Donlon - Wright State associate head coach , Tom Herrion - Pittsburgh associate head coach, Mike Lonergan - Vermont coach, Pat Kelsey - Xavier assistant, Barry Hinson - former Missouri State coach, Russell Springmann - Texas assistant, Rodney Terry - Texas assistant, Steve Forbes - Tennessee assistant.
Longshots the UNCW fans would want: former Depaul coach Jerry Wainwright, Brad Brownell - Wright St. coach

I hope they don't hire Springmann - - I have a feeling that guy is going to be a great coach. No slam on Shaka, but Springmann to VCU would have been exciting.

The Wilmington Star News is reporting that one high-profile coach has withdrawn his name from the school's coaching search.

"Multiple sources confirmed that Kansas assistant Joe Dooley is no longer a candidate for the UNCW coaching vacancy," wrote columnist Brian Mull. "He was contacted and believed to be a favorite at one point. Dooley and UNCW AD Kelly Mehrtens worked together at Kansas."

With the East Carolina job coming open this week, UNCW might want to move quickly to fill the vacancy. ECU is in Conference USA, which is more of a destination for rising coaches than the CAA, with more media exposure and thus more money on the table, most likely.

Vermont will play Boston University for the America East title and auto-bid on Saturday, so even Mike Lonergan will be difficult to reach out to at this point.

Wanna bring the fans back then fire the UNCW AD and put in Wainwright as AD.

As of today, UNC Wilmington only has one member in its 2010 recruiting class. Tanner Milson, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard via Texas, signed with the Seahawks after considering Texas State, Bucknell and San Diego. However, Milson might want to reconsider those other schools' offers soon.

The senior's father confirmed that since Benny Moss was fired over a month ago, his son has not heard from AD Kelly Mehrtens about the direction UNCW will take in the future. "I'm disappointed. It's normal practice for the athletic director to contact the recruits, but we haven't heard anything. We don't know what's going on," said David Milson (Tanner's father).

As of right now, interim Brooks Lee is still the head coach and while Milson has indicated his intention of playing for the CAA school, it does seem odd that the AD would not give recruits some indication or a few words to let them know the up and up. If Milson does decide, however, that UNCW isn't the place for him, the future head coach has a tough -- but not impossible -- battle to rebuild the Seahawks program. Leading scorer Chad Tomko and leading rebounder John Fields are both juniors.

Andy have you put in your resume?

I'm not quite sure how Kelly Mehrtens has a job. The woman is seemingly incompetent.
