Unsung hero of the KU Game

i was thinking the exact same thing after the game. to see him stroll up to the free throw line and swish two free throws was good enough, but his two baskets were even more of a bonus. plus, he took at least one charge (maybe 2?) along with some tough interior D.

hats off to the kid. good for him.

I knew who you were going to say before opening the post. Definitely agree, did the little things that went somewhat unnoticed compared to Jamie that helped make the difference in the win!

First post in a while ;)

But props to TOBY VEAL for playing a great game!!!

I was going bring this up but with all the posts on here i figured it was said somewhere. Agree 100%. Talking to a few guys before the game and every game we just need somone we arent expecting to do anything to step up for us. Just like Reddic/Haley/Rob (even Theus) have done in the past few games.

Where you been at0m? I agree with your post. From starter to unsung hero. We can not lose with this team.

One of the commentators mentioned him having an outstanding game for us yesterday, but I can't remember who. Glad to see he gets what he deserved tho, and I really hope to see more of him next season! I wish I could make a huge poster of him getting that one-handed rebound against KU.

Also, we gotta give it up for our red-shirts who are there in practice to play against and push the rest of the guys, and Hinton and Daniels who've allowed everyone else to "leave it all on the court" because they knew they had 2 quality options still left on the bench. We all saw that Jamie, Joey, Brandon, and Brad received some praise and accolades, but we can't forget Ed Nixon for doing all the stuff that doesn't make highlights but wins countless games for us.

Hahah crap, I hijacked this thread from Mr. Veal. Do it for Savannah, and do it for VCU Toby! Thanks for transferring here of all places. We won't let you regret it!

That one hand rebound was sooo good. I figured he had to be jacked up playing against Kansas since he didn't get to play in those 2 games v. Kansas when he was at Colorado. I bet it was extra sweet for him to see us get into the Tournament over his old school also.

Someone made this comment on another thread, but how in the heck does an opposing coach look at the tape and develop a game plan when they are getting ready to play VCU right now? Who do you focus on stopping??

Let's take a quick look at this run so far and see if we can figure that out....

USC - Skeen leads in scoring, he and Burgess clean up the glass....but you can't count out the contributions from the freshmen Reddic (5 pts 4 reb 15 mins) and Brandenberg (8 pts 3 reb 16 mins)

Georgetown - Poor Chris Wright broke his hand....don't think I heard the announcers mention once that the Mayor of Richmond had suffered a broken hand this year too! World, meet Brandon Rozzell! Joey with 17 pts, 7 asst, 2 to's

Purdue - 6 guys in double figures!!! Juvonte Reddic had 12 in 10 mins of play! DJ Haley had 6 in 9 mins, and neither of them turned the ball over at all making their moves in the post! Burgess 23, Skeen 13, Joey 12, Reddic 12, Nixon 11, Rozzell 10. JOEY 11 ASSISTS 0 TURNOVERS AGAINST A BIG 10 DEFENSE!

Florida State - Burgess with 26, Jamie with 11 & 8, Joey with 10 assists (3 turnovers), but what about THEUS and BRANDENBERG - Joey in foul trouble and Theus steps in and plays 22 mins and goes 4-5 from the field and grabs 6 rebounds against a team of giants! Rob plays 20 minutes when Nixon can only go 18 and plays shut down defense - and apparently blocked the game winning shot 9 times!!!

Kansas - Jamie Skeen show. MVP. Unsung hero: Definitely Toby Veal. Reddic and Haley have bright futures ahead of them in the black and gold, but this was Kansas. This game needed someone that could go in and not be afraid and not back down. 6 points and 5 boards was just gravy!

So, how many different names were just mentioned? Skeen, Burgess, Rodriguez, Nixon, Rozzell, Haley, Reddic, Theus, Brandenberg, and then Veal on the biggest stage of them all - so far. How do you prepare for that??

I didn't even begin to approach the subject that is discussed on another thread - are all these teams having bad games? Are all these guards having off shooting nights? Or have all of these McD's All-Americans never before met a defender quite like Ed Nixon???

Ed vs Mack and Skeen vs Howard is going to be fun to watch.

Veal was awesome to watch yesterday, so much energy. I am pretty sure Albert or Kerr called him Rozzell a couple times when he would check in, or maybe that was the FLa St. game. Either way Ioved the baby hook in the 2nd half.

Yeah, where in the heck have you been? Toby has been coming along. Don't forget that he was playing hurt for the majority of the season (as were a lot of guys).

You broke it down perfectly. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe any of our players have really been SHUT DOWN by the opposing D the entire tournament. If one guy started missing shots or someone else was hot they would defer to them, but we have taken stars on opposing teams who are used to being double and triple teamed and held them to very low FG percentages. So even when a guy isn't hot, he isn't hurting us. Then he picks it up in the next game.

Well, long story short, I've been keeping up with Rams baketball all season....just never really got around to posting back on here :|

But don't fret, I've put in my transfer papers and am on my way to becoming a VCU Ram, and not a Shepherd Ram :!:

Do I dare compare Veal to one of my favorites, TJ Gwynn? IMO both are/were energy guys

At least you are doing the right thing now. Welcome to VCU! (as a student)

Veal and TJ could end up being a lot alike however Veal will only be here for 2 years and TJ was here for like 9. He was around for 3 head coaches, 103 wins, and 5 different hair styles.
