Longer than a Leap Year: Measuring 6’11'' with a 7’7†wingspan, Sanders has made a name for himself as one of the most dominating defensive players in the country.
King of the Block Party: Sanders has blocked a total of 187 shots in his past two seasons, and ranked seventh in 2008-09 and 11th in 2007-2008 in all of Division I. Lock your doors, turn off the lights and hide your VCU shot block records because Larry is coming to get them.
Captain America: In both of his seasons with the Black & Gold, Sanders has earned All-America recognition from CollegeInsider.com. He earned Freshman All-American accolades in ’07-’08 and Honorable Mention Mid-Major All-American honors in ’08-’09.
Mr. Sanders’ Neighborhood – The 2009 CAA Championship was a statement game for Larry as he burst onto the national scene with a dominant 18-point, 20-rebound, seven block performance. Those 20 boards broke the previous tournament record held by “The Admiralâ€, David Robinson, who grabbed 19 for Navy in 1986.
Tourney Time is Sanders Time – That breakout game was the culmination of two years of outstanding CAA Tournament performances for Sanders, who has averaged 12 points and 12.4 rebounds in five games at the Richmond Coliseum.
A Happy Camper – Sanders has long been recognized for his big-time potential by NBA scouts. He parlayed a stellar sophomore season with the Rams into two exclusive hoops camp invites this offseason: The LeBron James and Amare Stoudemire Skills Academies.
The High School Days
Late Bloomer, Quick Study – Sanders didn’t play organized basketball until his sophomore year in high school, but his talents emerged quickly. He helped lead Port St. Lucie to back-to-back district championships and one regional title.
Shining Bright in the Sunshine State – After he averaged 19.9 points, 12.1 rebounds and 5.9 blocks per game during his senior season with the Jaguars, Sanders earned Second Team All-State accolades.
I Remember the Night When… – Sanders provide Port St. Lucie fans with one of those nights when he poured in 25 points and grabbed 24 rebounds in a single game.
Getting to know Larry
Larry “Picasso†Sanders – Before basketball came along, Sanders was dedicated to art and still has a very strong interest in drawing and painting.
Coach Sanders – Beyond his playing career aspirations, Sanders hopes to one day become a coach.
The Next Big Unit – Asked what sport he would be playing if not basketball, Sanders chose baseball. Can you picture that frame on the mound at The Diamond pitching for Coach Keyes?
