Looks like USC due to boosters violations with OJ Mayo, decided to self-impose sanctions on their Basketball program.

The self-imposed sanctions include:

• No postseason play in 2009-10, including the Pac-10 conference tournament.

• A reduction of one scholarship for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

• Reducing the number of coaches permitted to recruit off-campus by one during the summer of 2010.

• Reducing the number of recruiting days for the 2010-11 academic year, to 110 from 130.

I thought this was relevant to VCU basketball because it may lead to another at-large bid for our conference. USC seems to have had a bad loss against Loyola Marymount ( :o ) and a loss to Nebraska, but other than those two teams, they have had quality wins against Tennessee, St. Mary's, UNLV, and Arizona. They also beat Arizona State and WMU.

Also, I wasn't sure if we were recruiting anyone from over there, doubt it, but if we were, then maybe they may reconsider since they have to reduce their scholarships by one for the next two years.

But like has been said before, let's not go for an At-large, let's just win the tournament and get in the CAA champions way 8-)

Between this and the problems their football program has had, I'm surprised more hasn't been done to punish them.

That really sucks for their current players. A college player lives for March. To take that away from a team that had nothing to do with it is total crap. Tell the boosters that THEY are not allowed to attend the post season. Let the boys play. I mean, their SR PG is at his 3rd school, JUST got eligible this sememster, and the team has been on a tear. To pull the rug out like that is just plain bad.

I think any time a school is punished like this the players should be allowed to transfer without having to sit out. It is still not a perfect situation, but every time stuff like this happens the majority of the ones getting punished had nothing to do or received no benefit from the violation that took place. Those that were responsible have usually already moved on, and in some cases moved up. Any ideas on how to better punish violations such as these, or do you agree with the current system?
