The SEC is expected to soon announce that Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl will be suspended for this season's first eight league games as punishment for admitted NCAA rules violations, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com on Friday.

An attempt to reach Pearl for comment wasn't immediately successful.

Pearl's future has been uncertain since athletic director Mike Hamilton held a press conference in September to tell reporters that the school's men's basketball program is being investigated by the NCAA. Pearl has since confirmed a CBSSports.com report that detailed how he illegally hosted recruits at his house in 2008 and subsequently misled investigators about it. His contract has been voided, but he's expected to sign a new agreement with Tennessee in the coming months, if not weeks. The school will likely get a notice of allegations from the NCAA sometime in 2011.

The 24th-ranked Vols are off to a 3-0 start this season.

They play Virginia Commonwealth next Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

Please help! I'm terribly confused.

Is Bruce Pearl the same guy who used to be known as Earl "The Pearl" Monroe? I sort of see a resemblance.

As the kids say, I LOLed.

Just another reason to beat the heck out of these guys.

so if pearl is later sanctioned by the NCAA and say they prevail wednesday what happens? do we get the win 1-0? does the result stand? should he even be allowed to coach under such circumstances? Isn't the U of Tenn above all this and shouldn't they sanction their coach due to the under certainty of the results of the the INVESTIGATION?
Someone please roll the pics of him with the co-eds?
Just asking

He has been sanctioned by the university (no off campus recruiting/pay cut). I don't think any of Tennessee's win's are in jeopardy. That usually only occurs when players are ruled ineligible. I think the most likely scenario in this case would be a post season ban going forward. The NCAA isn't expected to rule until the spring however so none of this really affects our game with UT.

can't blame the guy
however, the espn bottom line (the same bottom line that refused to stream the vcu/wfu score) said the ncaa would make a decision next mpnth...

Just the letter of allegations. The meeting with the infractions committee will come in Jan./Feb. and a final ruling in April.

oh shoot....thats just time for the allegations?
so if the hammer comes down, does UT forfeit their wins? Should they be excluded from the dance for improper recruiting that may have gotten them there?
I know Pearl is small potatoes for the ncaa compared to things like auburn's cam newton, but seriously how deep is this?
I mean his own university has voided his contract. Should he be allowed to even coach if he isnt an employee?
Suppose he did something detrimental to the university or its image, he can't be held liable for his action since he isn't under contract. This is SEC at it's best?

There is no expectation at all of past or future wins being vacated. The players on our current roster who were listed in a release in September to have been involved in the actual violations were:
Fr. Tobias Harris (fall of 2009)
Fr. Jordan McRae (fall of 2008)
So. Kenny Hall (summer of 2008)
Jr. Renaldo Woolridge (fall of 2007)
Sr. Melvin Goins (summer of 2009)

All of the violations were deemed secondary in nature and none of the players involved's eligibility was ever in question.

The reason for the suspension today and worry from our athletic department is in the multiple lies Pearl told investigators over this summer. ESPN's Chris Low said today he believes Pearl will receive a small suspension, a loss of scholarships, and multiple years probation. He doesn't believe a postseason ban will be applied because no players have been found or accused of any wrongdoing. Nothing would surprise me with the 'AA though.

instead of beating the facts to death I have a question for UT fans...all this is ok by you guys?
Do you condone Pearl's actions..primary secondary or ancillary?
The fact he is still there, unscathed, speaks volumes on how Power 6-BSC or whatever views themselves in the NCAA spectrum and thus the cause for distain by us little peons
