From the Hampton Roads paper, this article compared the state's universities basketball recruiting budget.

http://hamptonroads.com/2010/07/dollars ... -more-less

There was a complete listing in the paper. VCU's budget was just under $60,000, putting in the lower half of all the schools in the state. Suprisingly W&M had one of the top budgets just behind UVA and Tech.

While I feel we have done well with recruiting, not having much flexibility in your budget to make last second changes can hamper our efforts in the long run.

looks like it has really hampered us
like any budget its how well you use it that counts (I'm looking at you UVa)

Total amount of dollars spent on recruiting is not necessarily the figures needed to compare universities. Those schools that have football probably will have a larger budget; those schools that have a large number of athletic teams will have a larger budget. We need to make sure that we are not comparing apples with oranges.

I believe the numbers given were just for mens basketball, but if I am wrong it wouldn't be the first time.

I read yesterday that major powers in basketball spend around 200,000+. The article was talking about Butler making the National Championship with a budget of 59,000(That's expected to rise though in hopes of better recruits). The fact that VCU is getting such great recruits with 60,000 is quite amazing.

Given we are sweetining the pot for Shaka does anyone know our present recruiting budget? Also, this year and for 2014 we have commitments from four (4) players three of which are about 6'1 or shorter. This begs two (2) questions?

First, will we ever consistantly recruit and attract top one hundred (100)/ four (4)/five (5) star players?

Second, are we purposely going small or do we believe we have enough big guys for over the next several years?

Thoughts, will we ever consistently get the four and five star guys? How about the bigger 6'5, 6'6 6'7 wings, and/or mobile 6'8, 6'9 bigs?

I want to add I am not criticizing any recruit as I have not seen anyone play. Also, if Shaka wants em he can I support his decision. I am just curious as if we've tried to move up the recruiting food chain, and if we are trying to recruit better big guys as well. Basically, has our new found success opened any doors. I know we got Melvin but he kind of fell in our laps back in July and Jordan was most likely coming regardless.

That fODU budget has really been beneficial for them. They are so strong that they beat UVa. :D

It has been stated before in these forums that there are only a handful of those big scoring wings around the country so will often only be found at major programs where they can get better competition and visibility to go pro. Or they skip college and go straight to pro. Other 5 star recruits outside major schools are rare situations. Most recruit rankings only have about 20 or so in the country. Often you will see a major program with a handful of higher recruits surrounded by role players. Big time players want big time minutes so you won't find that kind of depth. VCU prefers to fill its team with depth of quality players (2-3 stars with some 4s sprinkled in) and making the most out of their abilities with strong coaching. Note that Weber, Guest and Graham were all 2 star players according to ESPN.

Look at this 2012 top 100 list. You can count on one hand the number of teams not in the 6 big conferences that were able to land a top 100 recruit. VCU is the only one who got 2, so we aren't doing too bad (although we have 0 in 2013 top 100).

Being in a better conference like the A10 raises our ability to attract 4 star recruits like Melvin Johnson, etc. The new practice facility will help too once that is built. I'd rather have 10-12 guys who can play on the floor and contribute than 6 or 7 with the rest being spare bodies that are used in emergencies only. Will we consistently get 3s and some 4s now that we are in A10? Yes and much better chance of doing so than when we were in CAA. But getting bunch of 4s is unlikely.

That is truly disappointing. We should have the ability to get top one hundred kids. If not we are essentially recruiting at the same level we were before. Again, Melvin singed in late July and kind of fell in our laps due to issues with Miami.

Also, we've had the bigger wings 6'5,6'6,6'7 kids here before. Nick George, Mike Anderson, Kearse, Bradford plus transfers like Mike Doles, Willie Taylor. Presently, we only have one Jordan and he is on the smaller end. If all three of the new guys come. We will have more 6'1 guys than I can remember.

I do not think it is unreasonable to expect us to move up recruiting just a bit due to our success. Again, it may take a few more years for our rep to take, but if we were getting guys like, Nick, Mike Anderson, Juvonte, Dom Jones, Joey, Ed, Kearse, Santil all of whom were solid 3 star kids, it doesnt seem unreasonable to expect high 3 low four and a top 100 player included in each class. That really wouldnt represent a major jump up but a slight.

Again, as stated, I have not seem any of our recruits play, am not knocking anyones ability. Just wondering when we move up the recruiting food chain.

I would argue we have moved up the food chain. It is a slow process and will take a few years in the new conference and after new facilities to notice a difference. The last few years have allowed us to build a brand and get some visibility so we are able to get some solid 3s and 4s.

I'm not complaining about what Shaka is doing with 1-3 star talent so far. Going after big names isn't Shaka's recruiting style. He wants guys who are undervalued and underappreciated who will have that extra underdog fight in them. Guys who know they have to work hard and prove they deserve minutes on the court. Not guys who are placed on pedestals and think they can skate by and have everything handed to them. Shaka knows what his teams needs are and that is what they recruit.

Flip through to offers on 2012 and 2014 too. Shaka is going after those taller 3-4 star wings too, especially in 2014 class:

I agree, and I also now what kind of player fits best in this system. Also, I know he's going after the taller kids. That really wasnt my question. I was merely wondering when/if we would see a bump in the kind of kid we'd attract to the VCU given our new found success.

FWIW, if you want to compete with the best improving talent does help. Again, not critiquiing what our coach wants or who our players are. Simply wondering.

Any life long VCU fan knows that we have always been able to attract and recruit the 2-3 star guys. In fact, even when the coaching was bad we had pretty good players relative to our success.

A former player posed the question to me, a question I hadnt really thought about. I wondered if anyone had thoughts. I also remember a former player who started in front of Walt Williams in HS tell me he chose VCU because they had been ranked eleven (11) a couple of years before and were on the move up.

Finally, there are four (4) star kids that are humble and hard working. Just look at Melvin & Jordan, plus JU was very close surely there are others out there like them.

I would say with tourney success next two years and after new practice facility is built there may be a slight bump. Sweeteners would be final 4/championship runs, if any of our guys get drafted into NBA over the next few years or if in some highly unlikely scenario we move into a major conference.

That sounds reasonable. I wonder how long it took Gonzaga?

We've also shown that some of the 2-3 star guys can be a lot better than their ratings indicated. Tre was a 3-star and Bri was a 2-star. Look at them now.
