Virginia has some solid basketball teams this year. I am super impressed with U of R, and, to a lesser degree, W & M. They appear to be the teams to beat. First, however, is little RI.

I am just glad to see UVa at #10 behind everyone else.

VCU, ODU, W&M, WT, ODU and the others need to really hit on this and put UVA in their place. Soon I believe the same will become true of VaTech. Let the people know who the real basketball teams are in the state of Virginia..

And if UVa and Tech don;t like it then let them put up or shut up. We will gladly put them on our schedule at the Stu.

GMU

Lost second-half lead at Tulane. In their defense, the Patriots are not the first to give it away in New Orleans. (Jack Lambert)

I would enjoy taking jabs at UVA's program now, because they made a very good hire in Bennett. He doesn't have his players in yet, but in 2-3 years he will have a solid program in Charlottesville. When this happens, they will undoubtedly be the premier team in VA once again regardless of what we are doing at VCU or anywhere else in the CAA. Honestly UVA still has the best history of basketball success in the commonwealth, by far. They play in arguably the top conference, they will get the higher rated recruits, they have one of the best basketball facilities in the country, and they now have a solid coach...it's just a matter of time for them whether we like it or not. Tech? Well, they will be on the NCAA bubble as long as they have Greenberg, but I don't see them getting much better.

We are solid, and may be better than the VA ACC schools now, but that doesn't make us a better program. We need more than one NCAA win ever 22 years to do become that. Just my opinion, you don't have to agree!

UVA this past decade:

2007 1-1 Defeated Albany in first round, 84-57
Lost to Tennessee in second round, 77-74

2001 0-1 Lost to Gonzaga in first round, 86-85

Albany? Aren't they the team with the big blue dog?

Must have been the laptop I had at the time.

Definitely saw Richmond having a great year... curious to how long W&M can keep things going though (hopefully we can hand them their first CAA loss Saturday).

Shaver really is a class act, so definitely will root for him to have a solid season down there when they aren't playing the black and gold.

Since they don't want to play us we will likely never find out who is the better team. Shaka wanted to start a series with them. You can't say you are the best team in the state and then run scared from a mid major.

exactly....

College Basketball continually gets more and more competitive and balanced. Just like Notre Dame in football now, their time is over. Sure one day they'll be a top 20 team again, but I don't seeing them returning to the ralph sampson days in the foreseeable future and getting over that hump. We are by no means compareable to the top ACC teams, but we could definitely compete, well at that, with your virginia techs and UVA's in the ACC.

But there's no reason for them to schedule us with their tough conference schedule, they don't need more losses with no potential upside. We lose, they're supposed to beat us. We win and its a big upset. Maybe when we attain more national prominence....

I know you guys are looking through the black and gold glasses (I have a pair too), but UVA's recent tournament success, which is being mocked as limited, is comparable to our recent success. We have 1 win in the NCAA's this decade and you have to go back to 1985 to find our other next most recent win. Sometimes I think VCU fans have selective memories or are getting big heads about recent media attention.

For the record, the UVA men's basketball program record looks like this:
- 16 NCAA tournaments
- 22 NCAA tournament wins
- 7 sweet 16s
- 2 elite 8s (most recently in 1995)
- 2 Final 4s
- 30 NBA draft picks

I love our team and our program, but like I said, we are not the premier program in the state. We are doing well now and I hope we continue that success, but we are in no position to put "UVA in their place". It wasn't too long ago that we had some pathetic teams ourselves. A little perspective might be in in order...at least until we win another tournament game, or two, or three, or four...
