News VCU Athletic Village

I keep seeing this pop up. I have hearsay and my thoughts while hearing about this partnership since before any ground was broken for this baseball stadium. When it was first being talked about the counties of Henrico and Chesterfield were supposed to be involved to help with the cost. They both bailed. Ed and Parney are good friends but during this process the Squirrels had Parney take a step back. Seems to me that the rental cost escalated and my guess is that now that is close to being finished the Squirrel management does not want to share it with anyone.
Henrico, Chesterfield, and Hanover bailed as the city told them wouldn’t get a cut when the stadium was proposed.
Sounds like a lot of pettiness and ego.

And from my understanding, the Squirrels didn't finance the stadium right? So why do they get so much say in how it's used. Again, I don't know the ins and outs of much of this, but once this state of the art stadium is completed I would assume the City of Richmond would have zero problems getting a new tenant if the Squirrels are unhappy and decided to bounce.

Squirrels are paying like 3 million a year on the lease. The reports were they were letting us play there too for a lot less while maintaining everything.

The Squirrels also invested some of their own money into the building of CarMax Park. VCU did not. The Squirrels have a lot more skin in the game than VCU.

I wonder if Henrico County would fund the construction and remake of the Crossings Golf Course. The county spends a lot of money on recreational facilities. Next chance I will ask Dennis Bickmeier.

I doubt it. I think they gave the long term lease to the folks at Independence because they did NOT want to deal with the details. Henrico owned Belmont for a long time and divested itself of that some years back.

Henrico tried to turn Belmont into housing before first tee came along

Henrico County has to have some skin in the game as they own The Crossings. Yes, they signed a lease with the owners of Independence Golf Club, but Henrico County still owns the property. My guess is if Independence doesn't move forward with the remake, they would be in defualt of their lease agreement and Henrico County would have another Green City on their hands. Just like Green City, I don't see Henrico County changing their plans with The Crossings. It just may end up being a different developer.

This thread is as good as any

Quick reminder that today marks opening day for our VCU Diamond Rams, Coach Thompson has put together a very nice looking team that will surely be an improvement over last seasons rather atrocious results

Currently playing game 1 of 3 vs Holy Cross at , yes, the Diamond...before they go south to play Illinois and a very highly ranked Coastal Carolina team

Please feel free to putter on over to the baseball subforum where there are a good 7 or 8 of us are holding the line of keeping VCU Baseball relevant and hoping for their return to the top of the A10

(Preseason poll has us finishing 8th....I think it'll be much higher than that....3rd or 4th seems do-able)

Sean was a freshman on the 2015 Regional title team. That was my senior year and I was a manager. Really good dude who looked like Jeff Samardzija (shoutout former Notre Dame wide receiver before sticking to baseball).
