NORFOLK, Va. (April 18, 2010) – Top-seeded VCU pulled out a thrilling 4-3 victory over #2 William and Mary to capture the CAA Women’s Tennis Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University
It was the third CAA title for the Rams, but first since topping W&M, 4-1, in 2006. With the victory, VCU earns the CAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
VCU took a 1-0 lead after an exciting doubles competition. The Tribe’s number three team of Lauren Sabacinski and Marlen Mesgarzadeh opened with an 8-3 victory over Alex Bara and Olena Leonchuk, but the Rams picked up a win at number two as the tandem of Kateryna Yergina and Laura Burns beat Carmen Pop and Anik Cepeda, 8-5. The point was decided at number one doubles, where VCU’s Josefin Hjertquist and Ana Bara won the final four points in the tie-breaker to pull out a 9-8 (7-3) triumph over Ragini Acharya and Katie Kargl.
