(*Each poll will run for 24 hours...winner advances)

Anyone have any analysis of this fantasy matchup? Breakdowns? Game tape?

Ren was great, but he couldn't fend all those guys off by himself. Just too much fire power up front. Not to mention McCoy from the outside.

RAMRAM-- HAS A GOOD TEAM BUT I WOULD AGREE THAT...I DONT THINK THE DEFENSE HOLDS UP ON THIS ONE..... :ugeek: :ugeek: :ugeek:

Thanks for putting up one of the best Summer threads ever. I spent way too much time on this and enjoyed every minute of it. So, here goes:

Name Points Assists Rebounds

Team 4

Lamar Taylor 2 5 1
BA Walker 15 3 3
Patrick Lee 18 1 2
Jabo Wilkins 21 1 6
Ren Watson 12 1 10
Richard Jones 7 1 2
Torrance Archie 0 0 2
Ivan Chappell 4 0 2

Team 79 12 28

Team 6

Sherman Hamilton 5 6 2
Tyron McCoy 16 2 3
Phil Stinnie 16 2 6
Bernard Hopkins 16 0 8
Eugene Kissourine 12 1 5
Lionel Bacon 5 2 1
Marlow Talley 4 0 2
Reggie Okosa 2 0 1

Team 76 13 28

This was a battle of forwards for the most part and the difference came down to an edge in ballhandlers on Team 4 vs Team 6. The Sherminator had a large time feeding all those scoring options but got worn down in the end by a lack of backcourt depth.

Someone give me a real reason to vote for their team...offense, defense, match ups, intangibles(a player with The Eric Maynor Show like ability)

We all have our favorite players and that influences our decision making so I'll try and be a little more objective in my analysis of the matchup.
Inside: VERY Intriguing matchups. 4 VCU hall of famers battling inside.
Offensively Charles Wilkins #3 (1716) and Phil Stinnie #4(1645) match up pretty well for total points. CW may have been the more consistent scorer having had the highest career scoring average at 23.8 in school history, while Phil is absent from the top ten here. Both were good career free throw shooters with CW(336)PS (375) but Phil was the more consistent 4th on the all time list(.787). Where this matchup breaks down is offensive/defensive rebounds. The edge here has to be clearly in favor of CW. CW is the leading career #1 rebounder in VCU history at 13.5. Phil Stinnie's name is absent from the top ten VCU rebounders.
Lorenza Watson and Bernard Hopkins While LW (1257 #20 all time)certainly put up more total points in his career, BH was a more consistent scorer averaging (15.5 per contest, #9 all time), and leads the RAMS in career field goal percentage at (.571 - 2yr avg).LW is not far behind on that career percentage list at (#5, .547-4 yr average). While BH was an excellent rebounder (#6, 9.3 career avg), LW was better (#1 total career rebounds 1143, and #2, career avg 11.0). Defensively LW's shot blocking is unparalelled blocking over 100 shots per season for 3 straight years for a staggering total of 391).
Inside Bench analysis Richard Jones(#28 all time scoring, 1019, career avg 9.9rbg, #4 all time),Torrence Archie (career avg TP avg 10.1pg, 6.1rbg) vs. Marlow Talley (no stats) Reggie Okosa (7.4ppg,6.7rbg).
Very evenly matched inside games but I believe the high rebounding averages and the defensive intimidation of LW puts inside game edge clearly in the court of the Ramramthankyoumaam team. I've tried to be objective here if any additional OBJECTIVE information is available please post.
My analysis of the outside games will follow shortly.

PS. We are going to do a game a day...give them the spotlight they deserve, and let us really look at each team (and there are only 9 teams so it'll still go pretty quick).

First of all I will say I can only present the objective data for players on whom I have information.
Outside game: Again what a match up!!
Sherman Hamilton (unknown TP) vs. Lamar Taylor (#27 all time, 1078). Height advantage 6'2 toSH, 5'9LT but this size favors floor quickness. SH averaged 9.6ppg his senior season (unknown career avg)) to LT career avg of 9.9ppg. Assists: SH (#7 all time,417) LT (#4 all time,527, with assist averages of SH (4.63, #7 all time) while LT (4.83, #6 all time). Steals: LT (#3 all time, 193) also carries the edge over SH (#8 all time, 124). SH scored 7 more three pointers over his career (#6 all time, 153) than LT (#8 all time, 146).
Overall PG edge here although slight to LT bsed on objective stats. Add point guard depth to the ramram team with Patrick Lee (career avg 16.1ppg,3.3 apg, 5.3rpg).

Tyron McCoy vs BA Walker both shooting guards. Lets look at the numbers.
BAW (#11 all time leading scorer, 1480) to TM (#12 all time, 1456). 3pt field goal edge clearly in BAW favor (#1 all time 269) to TM (#9 all time 143). BAW career 3pt percentage (#9 all time, .391) bests TM's (not in top 10, unknown). Defensive edge goes slightly to TM here with steals (#6 all time, 146), to BAW (#9 all time, 120). Statistics here I believe slightly favor BAW particulalry with the PG advantage outlined above to be able get him the ball.

I don't have stats on the other players Lionel, and Eugene, but I'd love to see a bench comparison of objective stats if anybody's got them. I know Ivan Chapel was only one of 6 RAMS to make the all defensive team between 1986 and the present. He averaged over 10ppg his senior season.

That completes the statistical comparison of the two team's matchups that I could complile. What an awesome game this would have been to watch!!! But with that I believe I've made a good case for the victory to go to the RAMRAMTHANKYOUMAAM team and will cast my vote accordingly.

Play on!!!!!

Enough with the numbers! Ren Watson was a stopper in the paint. Think Larry, only bigger, stronger, meaner. Not as athletic, but then who is? Richard "Dickie Red" Jones was a fearsome rebounder. Jabo Wilkens could jump out of the building and was a potent scorer if only 6'3". A very formidable inside defense.

Outside, Lamar Taylor to distribute and B. A. to rain threes. I would worry about the lack of dribble penetration.

Team 6 with Bernard Hopkins, VCU's quintessential power forward (only KW was better in this position). A great scorer. Outstanding ballhandler. Big, strong with as pretty a baseline move as you will ever see, and close to unstoppable. Phil Stinnie was all heart, all attitude and another great scorer. Tyron McCoy with hops, penetration and good shooting. Hamilton to distribute with Bacon to spell him. Both could pop from outside if necessary. This team is well constructed.

Ramdom's team wins in a walk, too many weapons and too deep quality wise.

And don't forget Sherman Hamilton ended up being Steve Nash's PG on the Canadian Olympic team.

Sorry team 4 was ruined by the last two picks. And Richard Jones as a 6'4 PF wouldn't produce much against Talley and Stinnie.

OK, here's the deal:

Phil Stinnie - my favorite VCU player ever. Could score on anyone and would take big guys outside and knock down jumpers.

Bernard Hopkins - CAA Player of the year, led the Rams to an NCAA berth, owned the block, could aslo run the floor exceptionally well for a big man, a true widebody.

Tyron McCoy - maybe the best slasher we ever had, could score in bunches - just ask Billy Tubbs and Paul Westhead, one of the most athletic players we ever had

Sherman Hamilton - steady as a rock at the point, played on the Canadian national team, great leadership qualities

Eugene Kissourine - a huge matchup problem for the opponent - very crafty inside and could knock down the 15-footer, wish he would have come back

Marlow Talley - the enforcer, would dunk on you then tell you about it - just ask Ace Custis, good defender down low, could guard a 4 or 5

Lionel Bacon, smooth, I remember lots of floaters off the glass, terrific person - went on to work for the athletic department in a community service capacuty, would be a leader on this squad

Reggie Okosa - great athlete, seemed to do very well after transferring, very quick leaper - crashed the offensive glass, another opponent matchup problem - stronger than a 3 while being quicker than a 4

That's my team evaluation in a nutshell. If you need more convincing, just close your eyes and envision an opposing coach's face as he ponders how to guard both Stinnie and Hopkins down low and avoid getting his guys dunked on by McCoy.

Enough with the numbers????? Yeah lets just throw the books out the window shall we??? Statistics don't happen by accident they are earned over years of facing the toughest competition the Sunbelt/CAA had to offer. They are the only objective measure of career consistency and one's game that can't be ignored, especially in a fantasy draft against other VCU players. Overall a much better estimate of what kind of player is likely to show up on any given night.

This team is very likely the best three point shooting squad in the fantasy tournament (Lee #[email protected]%,Taylor#[email protected],BA#[email protected] and could potentially shoot the daylights out of the competition here from beyond the arc; with three of the top 5 rebounders in VCU history waiting to clean up any misses. I again think this team has better and deeper guard play, a scoring edge, and a clear rebounding advantage.

May not be as fun as imagining quaking coaching staffs or an unlikely game full of superhero dunks over some of the best competitive colleagues VCU has produced... but clearly...on paper... this is the better team.

I would just like to state that I'm loving this banter from the team's coaches. This is fun to read/follow along to. 8-) 8-) 8-)

I don't think I can vote against BA Walker ..

I am not voting yet, just saying, how the FLIP am I supposed to vote against BA Walker!!?!?!
