My team is comprised mostly of recent era players, but all of them could ball.

Dom Jones - One of the best point guards in recent memory not named Eric Maynor. Over 1600 points for the black and gold. #6 all time.

Michael Doles - CLUTCH. Who can forget when he put the Rams on his back to force overtime and defeat the UNCW seahawks on senior night?

Wille Taylor - 6'5 Guard who averaged over 17 points his final two seasons, and shot 49% from the field his senior year. Scored over 1300 points in his career in the black and gold. #15 all time.

Troy Godwin - Troy was a wide load in the paint who played taller than he was. 6'6, weighing in at 300 lbs, Troy was not afraid to pound away at the opposition.

LF Likcholitov - 6'11, 250 lb center from RUUSSIA. Shot 52% from the field for his entire career for the rams. Was a defensive presence in the paint blocking 2.5 shots a game (#2 all time at VCU), pulling in 8 boards a game and scoring 11 points a game. Blue collar all the way.

Fred Brown - Drafted by the Phoenix Suns, Scored 18 points in VCU's defeat of LaSalle in the first round of the 1983 NCAA Tournament. Scored another 14 and pulled down 8 boards in VCU's 2 point loss to Georgia in the second round.

Bradford Burgess - He may have only played one year for the Rams, but if you don't see something special in this kid, i suggest you look harder! He's going to be a good one!

And John Thompson, former coach for the Georgetown Hoyas.

It absolutely galls me to have to vote against Phil Stinnie, Bernard Hopkins and Tyron McCoy- some of the finest players to ever wear a Rams jersey, but John's team is too big down low and has two high powered players in Dom Jones and Michael Doles. Not only that, but these two were superb in the clutch. Close game but John wins in the last seconds.

if this fantasy game thing has done anything, it's made me question whether or not the majority of the voters are huffing oven cleaner 8-)

This should be the final championship game. Will have to do some more thinking on this one.

I love John Tatum more than perhaps any man should (winkin' at you john)...but I have one major issue with his squad: His starting 5 (or at least his first 5 selections) all played together, and they weren't terribly effective (1 NCAA bid between 98-05 which resulted in a loss...and 1 NIT bid..also a loss)

1. Dom Jones: 00-04
2. Doles: 02-05
3. Troy Godwin: 02-04
4. Willie Taylor: 00-03
5. LF: 98-02

6. Fred Brown: 81-82
7. Thompson: 86-88
8. Bradford: 08-present

While I respect all his players talents, they have proven to be only an average team...so I gotta go with Ramdom on this one just because his team is a bit more of a wild card.

I will add...in 2002 when John's starting 5 actually all played together as non-freshmen ...they finished 21-11 (11-7 in the CAA) and tied for 3rd...

Not terrible...but not All-Time (IMO)

Perhaps, but in 2002 two of those kids had just started playing for VCU, and eventually lead them to the NCAA tournament losing a heartbreaker to Wake Forest. As a matter of fact, Troy, Dom and Doles scored over HALF of VCU's points in the Wake Forest game. If you judged Eric Maynor, Jamal Shuler, etc by their freshman seasons it wouldn't exactly provide an accurate picture of their overall talent.

I don't think that you can accurately evaluate a player (or group of players) overall talent by the results of a single season. If that was the case, then the team of Eric Maynor, Larry Sanders, Jamal Shuler, Michael Anderson and Joey Rodriguez must have all been average players since they lost in the first round of the NIT Jamal's senior year.

It also wouldn't be fair to judge Tyron McCoy, Bernard Hopkins, and Sherman Hamilton on their record of 16-14 (3-9 in conference) just because the all play on that team.

You also need to take Coaching into consideration, Mack... I'll leave that discussion at that. ;)

I've seen this Ramdom team in action and dismantle the best team I could put together. I think Stinnie, Tyron, and Hamilton would give Doles, Jones, and Taylor all they could handle. Although Godwin was big, Hopkins had outstanding paint play (Thankfully I was fortunate enough to have seen him his senior season). They'd have to do a lot of double teaming on him to keep him from putting up the numbers. This is a tough one. I'll need to give it a little more thought too.

Hold on a minute. That team never all played together. First off, Troy and LF never were on the same team. We all had discussions at the time at how amazing it would be to have LF back, and move big Troy to the 4, but it never happened (closest we came was playing Troy and Kevin Moore at the same time). Michael Doles didn't become eligible until Christmas of '02, after LF had graduated. That team finished 18-10, got beat by a darn fine Robert Battle led Drexel team in the finals (who then lost to the fighting Blizzards of Wilmington).

The following year, after Willie graduated, that nucleus of Troy, Dom and Doles (best 6th man ever), was one of the best teams in VCU history.

Let's not forget that Team Ramdom is hot, coming off a nice win over thankyoumaam. Don't discount the momentum. Although, based on the voting, we have some work to do. I think you young guys would vote differently if you saw Team Ramdom's guys work in their prime.

I'm an old guy and still had to go with John's team - too deep and I think LF and Doles are the difference makers when the team's are compared. Random may have the best 2 or 3 top guys, but after that it is all John's players. Seeing Hopkins going against Godwin in their prime would be a fun matchup to watch, same with Taylor against McCoy. But after those matchups, who takes care of LF, Doles and Dom?

Excellent team John, will be hard to beat.

you are all... well except for 6 of us as I type this... on crack
