I'm applying for grad school for next fall and VCU is probably my top choice right now. Anyone here get their masters in economics from VCU? I'm applying for the Financial Economics program and thought I'd check here for any insight on the program in general (classes, difficulty, professors, etc..) I'll probably also be applying for the Finance masters program as well. Thanks guys. Looking forward to the match-ups between JMU/VCU this season.

Can't speak on economics, but you should visit the school of business. It looks great inside and out, has a small cafe/food store and state of the art classrooms and computer labs. The group study rooms even have a touch screen which allows you to reserve them.

Not to mention it's attached to the east hall of the engineering school, where you find the best and the brightest of VCU!

My girlfriend goes to VCU so I've went into Snead Hall a few times when visiting her to check it out and pick up some information. Very nice building.

No masters here, but I don't see how you could go wrong with the VCU School of Business. The facilities and the staff are top notch. Several of the finance professors I had in undergrad teach at the graduate level as well and they couldn't have been more informative or helpful. Being right down the street from the headquarters of several of Virginia's top employers is certainly an added benefit. I would suggest spending a day on campus and spending some time in Snead Hall talking to students and professors. You could even cap off the evening with a visit to the Stu to see your new favorite team in action. You are a Ram now.

I applied for the VCU Masters program of Economics and was accepted. I was a minor in economics for my undergraduate degree and majored in art (crazy combination, I know). I elected to defer my acceptance though because I got married and wanted to start working as I just graduated in May. The Economics program is very small at VCU but very much worth your investment. Though, I only got a minor in Economics I was close to many of my teachers and was able to talk to them about my decision to attend graduate school. You should email Professor Reilly as he handles the masters program at VCU. He would be more than happy to sit down and meet with you.
The best part of the economics program at VCU is that you are so close to the Financial Reserve. In fact you can see it from your classroom window. If you want to do financial economics I can't see a better place. I hope to attend next year but I will be in the regular economics masters program. Hope that helps!

I'm actually an Economics minor as well so we have very similar situations. I'm going to shoot you a PM.

My wife minored in econ (polysci major) at VCU and then went to the London School of Economics for her Masters in Local Economic Development. She thinks the econ staff (for the most part, there is always a bozo) at VCU is very good.

Honestly, the outliers for economics can't be any worse than the more questionable accounting professors there. Anyway, I know that my intermediate microeconomics professor at UVA occasionally teaches a course or two at VCU, although I'm relatively sure that he primarily teaches undergrad.

I am a little bias because I taught in the School of Business at VCU for 28 years, but I think you will come to appreciate the faculty, facilities, and the curriculum. It is neat that economics in in the School of Business rather than the College of Humanities and Sciences. You will get a much better understanding of economics as it is related to business. The faculty in the Economics Department is excellent. They are research oriented as well as student oriented. The business building is only two years old and is a "state of the art." Excellent research facilities and superior classrooms. Lots of "team" rooms that can be used for group meetings or for individual use. They can be reserved from your computer or from the classroom itself and can be used whenever their isn't a class scheduled. Every classroom is geared for "high tech." The Dean was an executive with Disney World--I believe he was CEO but I am not sure. He retired from Disney to become Dean of the School. Seems to be well liked. The graduate students at the School of Business come from some of the best undergraduate programs around. Do visit the building, talk with the students and faculty. Certainly talk with the Department Chairperson. If you come, you've made a good choice.

VCU Econ had many awesome Prof's...my favorites were Dr. Shar Shar - Economic Advisor to Anwar Sadat - and of course Dr. Wetzel.

I took Dr. Shar Shar for Thoery of the Firm - he made the class awesome - and was was arguably the most difficult class in the business school tuirned out to be my all time favorite (outside of Dr. Hunt in Org and management of course.) Learned so much from Dr. Shar Shar - always wonder where he went.

Dr. Wetzel was amazing - took Micro and Macro from him in one Summer - there were kids from Duke (really), UVA, and a host of other schools in there that Summer. learned a ton - and he was such a great teacher.

He loved milton Friedman.

Hey !!!

Over the years, we have built excellent working relationships with the corporate sector. Thousands of WLCI trainees have worked and earned stipends in national and multinational companies and have found attractive placements on completion of their Business Management Programmes.
