VCU HOLDS ON FOR 59-49 WIN AGAINST WINTHROP IN HOME OPENER

Junior forward Courtney Hurt registered her second straight double-double with a team-high 25 points and 12 rebounds and Virginia Commonwealth University held off a second half Winthrop rally and defeated the Eagles, 59-49, in its home opener Wednesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

VCU picked up its second straight win against a Big South opponent and improved to 2-0 on the season, while Winthrop dropped to 0-3.

The women looked very solid. The score is not indicative of the VCU's strength in both offense and defense. Unfortunately, our defense fell apart in the closing minutes and Winthrop gain a few points.
