Recruiting VCU in Deywilk Tavarez’s final 7

Research says he’s visiting UAB/C of C and has a cousin that plays for the Blazers.

Have no idea why we are excited about this player. Lit up a bunch of tier 3 schools and put up close to nothing against even average opponents. 40% shooter at the rim, 34% from three, and a turnover machine. Honestly his numbers are similar to Nelson's but against worse competition.

People excited he dropped 30 on NSU. Does nobody realize that was the lowest ranked team we played all season?

Might be feasible as a straight Nelson replacement, but other than that I don't see anything here that shows he can play at the level of competition we play at. I thought all the NIL and portal fears were greatly exaggerated, but if this is the type guys were going after we might be in trouble.

No one is insisting you be excited. My hunch is that we are on the list to make it look good.

But the kid was all conf as a freshman and ROY. He can score (although he was inefficient). Shot 36% from 3, which for a freshman is not awful.

I'd rather have Hammond everything considered, but if Odom thinks this dude is the real thing I am not going to be mad if he signs him

People are excited because his list gives the impression that he’d be easy to acquire.

Probably all we can afford

Some of you I think are being unrealistic. With NIL in the mix, it is difficult for us to compete with most majors for many elite mid-major players. And to be honest, most elite mid-major players who are transferring are looking to make bank & they want a shot at playing for a major. It also worked that way even before NIL. They are very difficult to get....not impossible, but very difficult even if we can compete with NIL.
Now, we can compete pretty well for elite or very good low mid-major players. Some may want to try a mid-level just to a higher mid-major rather than being buried on the bench playing for a major. Some will jump directly to a major now (because they can transfer again without penalty back down). Some may only have a year left aren't sure if they will get playing time at a major....they my opt for a high-mid-major like us.
Then you have the former mid or low major who was pretty hot before transferring to a major where they got buried on the bench. They may look to transfer down. These are the kids we have a shot at (Bam is an example of this type of player).
Then you have the kids who jumped direct to a major because they had high ratings as a HS player and it didn't work out. Some will simply jump to another major hoping it was the school or coach that cause them to sit and not their talent or lack there of at the major level. Some of those however, will decide to transfer down to a mid-major. Those are the kids we can get.
Others we may have a shot at are former major players who may have been injured and/or been recruited over (Johns and Zeb) or they were getting limited playing time and thus decide to transfer to a mid-major (We have gotten a number of these types of players over the years)
Then we can look at grad players who may have had moderate success at a major but want more playing time for their final year......thus they may go to a high-mid major like us. Or other low, mid, high major graduates with very good playing ability but want an extra year and come to us because we have a good grad program for them.

Good points all around. Yea, the portal door swings both ways....I think the biggest sea change of the last couple years ("COVID year", NIL, portal/transfer freedom) has really gutted HS recruiting. Yea, the ESPN Top 100 will still be a thing, and those guys will get a school (and get paid)...but it is a tough road to hoe for those 3*/4* guys.
What is a coach's incentive to take a shot on those guys? If it's some P5 school? It doesn't matter...move on or don't...Coach is gonna a la carte the roster afterwards anyway
What's a mid major coach's incentive for those guys?? Maybe save a little money and populate the roster with a promising player?? And when the kid grows and matures and breaks out?? He's gone...and you're a farm system for P5's.....rinse and repeat
I've NO IDEA how low mid/low schools do this....pick up scraps? Yea....that'll be great for team chemistry..."Hey Prairie View A&M...nice job snagging a guy way outside your weight class...good luck getting him to accept the team aspect your going for all while he ball hogs his way to a better deal next year"

It's hard not to by cynical from a mid/high mid standpoint...Is Deywilk Tavarez gonna be ready for D1 basketball out of the gate. No....no he won't....we've seen this dance before. He'll be less developed (mind and body), the game will be WAY faster than he's used to, and he'll get uneven to no run as he sits on the bench and stews...and as soon as he can leave he will....heck, it might go that way for B Jennings and us too...

Until the feckless NCAA get's their house in order...it's just gonna be a sh1tty version of pro ball. Get ready for a watered down G League everybody....but don't forget to place those prop bets on your betting app and get those brackets in for a big prize from Rocket Mortgage

rant over :)

Delaware State.

As mentioned earlier. We can do better
