PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Virginia Commonwealth University is five shots off the lead behind individual leader Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg, Va.) after the first round of play at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Callaway Gardens.

The Rams, coming off a team win at the Palisades Classic Tuesday, totaled 290 strokes, which is 2-over on the Par 72, 7,057-yard Mountain View course. Defending champion Georgia State (-3) leads the way. James Madison (+5) sits in third position.

Griffin fired a 3-under 69 to take a one-shot lead on Jason Chun of William & Mary and Allen John of Georgia State. Griffin stormed out of the gate with birdies on the first three holes. He recorded seven birdies on the day.

Sophomore Mark Jargren (Helsingborg, Sweden) is tied for fourth overall after shooting a 1-under 71. Freshman Evan Boyer (Raleigh, N.C.) and junior Rafael Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) are tied for 16th place at 3-over.

The tournament reconvenes on Saturday with second round play at 8 a.m. VCU is scheduled to tee off at 10:11 a.m. Fans can follow all the action via Golf Stat: http://www.golfstatresults.com//public/index.cfm?tournament_id=1486
