VCU knocks off Wofford

And like I added to my post, they hadn't beaten anyone ranked as high as GMU either at this point last year. So what's your ultimate point, they suck because they slipped up against Cornell and that guarantees this isn't going to be a quality win?

My point is that anything good that can be said about Wofford was last year. They also are in the Southern Conference, not the Big East. Put VCU in a low major conference like the Southern Conference and I'm pretty sure we'd run the table there as well.

All wins are big for the program, loses are a set-back. Just saying.

4RR your biggest issue seems to be marketing. you love to poke fun at Coach Smart's "HAvoc 2.0" you dissect every uttered word as gospel. Give it a rest. it is what it is, marketing. EVERYONE does it. You try to build your guys and program up in the media etc...
Additionally maybe his definition of a big, big win meant they accomplished some goals that had been set. In this day of parity the CAA is not light years away from the SOCON.
Any given night one team can beat another. Ask Uof R

note to certain posters-- if you are going to hang onto and dissect every single word uttered by coach smart, at the very least you should probably quote him correctly. just sayin'.

In the wasteland of horrible RamNation threads, this might be the king of all pointless nonsense.

You have basically taken a throwaway statement from the beginning of the presser that gives credit to a Wofford team that will likely contend for another NCAA bid and turned it into some self-serving critique. My brain hurts from reading this thread.

My statement is intended to speak less towards the hype machine and more toward with the inability to back it up. I certainly understand the aspect of marketing. Spin is something else alltogether. Just my opinion.

Is it far-fetched to think this team is ready to make a run through the SoCon? I don't think so.

I respect that, but I would have to disagree. Any argument for how Wofford is a quality team is based upon the past. By that same argument, Wake Forest was a quality win for us because in 1962 they made the Final Four. The UCLA victory was the biggest ever for our program because from 1964 to 1975 they won 10 national titles. I was going to say something great about our recent victory over New Hampshire, but that team has never accomplished anything. My point is that the odds are highly unlikely that Wofford will win out and achieve greater than 20 wins. That's like saying after week 8, the 2-5 Cincinnati Bengals were going to win out and make the playoffs. I mean, last year they did finish 10-6 and make the playoffs.

I'm pretty sure that Wake doesn't have four starters back from that 1962 team this year, but I'll go check the media guide.

We returned four of five starters from last year and it's apparently unrealistic to expect to finish better than last season...

Get back on script Morrisar, you're killing the program again! "VCU's win over New Hampshire was a big, big win because New Hampshire makes great syrup and they have 3 starters back and they once had a winning record in a mediocre conference."

On a serious note, at the end of the day, it doesnt much matter. It's nothing more than a quote and unfortunately wont change the minds of the folks who we'd really need believing it to be a big win: the NCAA selection panel. It was a necessary win and I'm glad they got it. Simply pointing out the reach of referring to it as a "big, big win" when it's obviously not.

i'm trying REALLY hard to see the point you are trying to make with this thread. i really am. were his comments THAT big of a deal to you that you had to bypass the existing wofford game threads and start this separately? i just don't see how these comments are a big deal.

are you saying that you expected coach smart to say something negative after the game? not say anything at all? talk about the weather?

all coahces spout off meaningless stuff after minor home wins. i'm just trying to wrap my head around how you feel coach smart's comments were out of line in any way. or are you simply looking for attention?

Didn't Saint Louis return all of their starters from last year? With 17 regular season games (most of them against A-10 competition) remaining, 5 more losses will put them at their total at the end of post season play last season. Looks really hopeful for them considering they are on a 3 game losing streak and coming off a loss to 5-9 Bowling Green. I still predict they will finish 22-8!

SLU did, I believe. But they've had some issues, if I'm not mistaken they've lost several players for various reasons.
