With VCU off this weekend, George Templeton and I sat down and answered listener mailbag questions. Plus, George goes on a full-on rant about fan obsession with the Big East.
It's actually six of the last 13 by my count. Regardless, I disagree with him somewhat, and said so during the show. George's point is that VCU getting a spot in the Big East may be dependent upon UConn leaving. If UConn leaves, that removes all but two of those national championships you mentioned. And, the team that got the other two, Villanova, is not what they once were. The Big East is a step up for sure, but it's not what it used to be.big east has won 7 of last 13 Nattys - Get real George!!!!
and no disagreeing A10 was a great landing spot for VCU
Big East would ensure we remain in the big boy NCAA basketball levels
Ah ... forgot about Louisville being in the BE. My bad.louisville in big east when they won Natty in 2013
Uconn 4 natty since 2011
villanova 2 natty
It has nothing to do with UConn and VCU being public. My point here is that the Big East is showing no interest in expanding right now, but losing a school might spur them to do something at least to replace that school if not add several at the same time. If the Big East wants a team that geographically makes sense and is the most successful team around that doesn't have football to gum up the works, that means VCU. Makes sense, no? I do recognize, of course, that they may choose to stick with their profile of private religious schools. In that case, yeah, you're looking at Dayton, SLU, and Loyola-Chicago.I don't understand why Uconn will play into any decision about VCU - suggesting that the big east only wants one public university is bizarre to me -
what did he sayHeads up- starting now! A10 Hoops talk with Phil Martelli on monumental channel (Verizon channel 576) today 11:30-12:00pm. Check it out!

no natty in 2020
no debating that villanova is no longer what it was but I would not sell that program short - long history of excellence and I doubt they will stick with the mediocre results under Neptune

it seems to me that the Big East would prefer no Public schools if Uconn left is the more predictable landing spot
But to me if the Big East grows to 16 or 18 schools , you run out of private catholic schools on that level or close to that level after Dayton, St Louis, and Loyola of Chicago -
and seriously I doubt they will go to next tier with St Bonnies, Holy Cross, Loyola of Md, Siena, Marist, Niagara etc....
if Big East goes to that next tier in a growth scenario to 16 or 18 they turn into what the A10 is today with half the conference good and half the conference middling to poor
I understand VCU to the Big East is a big reach but it is the ONLY realistic step up for VCU because of our decision not to play football (which I agree with 10000000%)
my original comments were not really intended as a criticism of your remarks but our host George
go rams
I want to say no. VCU is a better basketball coaching job and you don't have to play second fiddle to football. It would come with a pay raise and playing in a p5 conference, but there's a real risk of getting stuck in a cycle of mediocrity. Aside from the little run they had in recent history, Tech has not been any good at basketball. Plus living in Richmond beats the heck out of living in Blacksburg. If Tech came calling would Odom consider a step back?

At Tech you only need to play 0.500 in conference and you likely get asked to go to the dance. 0.500 in conference at VCU you won't even get asked to the NIT jr prom dance.I want to say no. We may be spending more money for our players than tech will spend on their's.At Tech you only need to play 0.500 in conference and you likely get asked to go to the dance. 0.500 in conference at VCU you won't even get asked to the NIT jr prom dance.
That can be a very powerful incentive along with the extra salary.
That said, Odom likely can do better than taking over a weak program like Tech. Especially if we are able to get into the big dance this year.
