I think the current Big East inviting UConn to rejoin was a one off due to their storied history in the Big East. I think thte Big East doesn't waiver from its commitment to like minded schools.
Yup, this is correct. The Big East wanted to enhance its profile and UConn has a long history of greatness in the old Big East. Their football program is inconsequential (although they did win their first bowl game since 2009 after their first winning season since 2010). Having one of the greatest women's basketball programs of all time and a very strong men's basketball program is a big boost to the current Big East's pedigree. Otherwise, the Big East has no interest in adding schools that don't meet their criteria - Butler is the only other non-Catholic university in the conference.

I also think Xavier is probably blocking Dayton from joining and SLU has been a mediocre program at best, and that's why we haven't seen any expansion from the Big East. Who else would they invite? Gonzaga alone just isn't a geographical fit for the Big East being on the west coast.
UConn was absolutely a "we want a good team and these guys USED to be in our conference" kind of add. Honestly, if the BE doesn't want to stray from its private Catholic school plan, then you're looking at the following schools, probably in order...

Dayton (they're not Jesuit, but they're at least Catholic)
Saint Louis
Loyola Chicago
Saint Bonaventure
Saint Joseph's
Loyola Maryland

No one else would even be worth considering, and honestly, the bottom three on that list probably aren't either. Gonzaga is out because they're going to the new PAC-12. Honestly, other than maybe Dayton (which, you're right, may be blocked by Xavier) can you see anyone in that list being legitimately a better add than VCU?

Also, I swear if the Bonnies or St. Joe's get added to the Big East before VCU, I will lose my freaking mind.

VCU is definitely the school with the higher ceiling when it comes to basketball, but its a public school. No one wants to go to Olean in the winter and St. Joe's isn't going to be added as long as Villanova is in the Big East. The Big East is already in the Chicago market with DePaul, so adding a middle of the pack team from the A-10 (Loyola-Chicago) really doesn't make sense.

With all that said, I just don't see the Big East adding anyone unless they have defections to one of the P4 conferences.

UConn is almost certainly gone at some point. They want a home for their currently independent football team. Someone will take them for their basketball team and put up with the trashcan football team.

Well I guess there's only one option then. VCU will have to convert into a private Catholic university.

Time to change what the C in VCU stands for.
We don't change for nobody, otherwise all the students will end up wearing a baseball cap, izod shirt, khakis, boat shoes and all looking the same. Next thing you know, the student section at the basketball games will be full of white guys all wearing speedos and nothing else.

The best fit for both their men's and women's basketball teams would probably be the ACC. I don't see the ACC doing anything else regarding expansion until the FSU/Clemson lawsuits are settled. UNC also wants out of the ACC badly and have been holding back room discussions to see what their options are.

The ACC from a handful of years ago would have been a fantastic landing spot for them. They're a perfect institutional and geographic fit.

Who is the Bishop over at the Cathedral now? Maybe we should take him along to negotiate? I haven't really had much knowledge of the Bishops since Sullivan, worked with him on some political stuff back, well a long time ago, good man. I think he would have done it.
