OK, I just got home from a quick grocery pick up at the Kroger near the Siegel Center. I'm sporting my gold VCU Basketball polo and this Richmond police officer standing behind the cashier says, "Hey I heard VCU purchased U of R Stadium today. I hear they are planning on starting a football team. Have you heard anything" I said, "No, but that is a great rumor, mind if I spread it around?"

Anyway, there it is, my first message board rumor. Anybody heard anything like this?

Wouldn't surprise me the way VCU has been buying everything up. VCU just acquired Hollywood Cemetery not too long ago. If VCU did buy it that about tells us everything as far the football thing.

VCU just purchased my virginity.......however, if VCU does go with Football, they will have to complete re-do (demolish) city stadium. It is a flat out joke of a stadium. great field though. VCU could build a nice 20-30,000 seat stadium. Parking, no problem...close to campus......I still see that area being developed for housing though................

Did I miss something? When did VCU buy Hollywood Cemetary? Can you provide any such evidence?

VCU + Football would not surprise me. Dr. Trani was against it but our new Prez has started Football programs everywhere he has gone. Norwood has experience with football at UNC and Georgia State and ODU are kicking off football programs.

The CAA is growing fast and has a good footing in Non-Championship bowl, Division 1-AA (whatever it's called), football. I can almost see Commish Yeager mandating all CAA schools adopt football by 2012 or so. It would be a big expense for the athletic department but let's be honest, VCU has approx 30,000 students and gets state aid, we can afford football and should provide such an entertainment to our alumi and active students plus the community of Richmond.

One other note, I am guessing if we start a Football program George Mason would soon follow. Then all CAA B-Ball schools would have football.

forgot about UNCW

Where did the new Prez start football programs?

The City of Richmond is always looking for non-revenue producing property that it can convert to revenue producing property. The U of R football stadium is a nice chuck of land that could be developed to generate revenue. The same thing can be said about the land around the Diamond. The transfer of the U of R land (owned by the City) to VCU for football is not a sure thing.

They mention that some of the land they acquired VCU could use for a stadium on the river but the cemetery itself is suppose to be made a memorial site. I read somewhere else that Pepsi had been offering different times to sponser the stadium. Not sure where that link is.

ok seriously RR, look at the date this was written, combined with the publication it was created it. Cmon, if you are gonna be a VCU fan, you HAVE to understand the dynamic between VCU and the residents of Oregon Hill throughout the ages (or at least the last 30 years)!!!!

The lack of perspective from the new fans is just killing me here.

ok, I should have read the article closer. He did not start any football programs but he is a fan of football, as he stated and he went to UF (gators) a big football school. Also the last two schools he was prez at had D-1 football programs, Central Michigan and Montana State.
