VCU Rams Send Off & Pep Rally

hope somebody posts some pictures from the rally :D

While getting me and the wife a sweet 16 shirt, :D I ran into a bunch of players headed to the Stu at the VCU bookstore. They came walking through with a camera guy in tow  They looked loose and were having fun!! Got to wish "The Mayor" and the guys good luck  They were having a ball with that mayor comment.  Good for them!!

stay loose, have fun!! and kick ass guys!!!

Pep Rally went fine. Pav gave a nice 25 min speech to try to pump up the crowd. I love how you could spot the bandwagon fans/fans just trying to get on TV real quick. Like the one next to me who went, "Who?" when Pav mentioned Shaka Smart SMH. Quite a few around me were clueless to the players. The look of confusion in my area when "You don't want to go to war" was played was priceless. Not as priceless as the ones around saying, "who is that guy?" when Pav was speaking. Also jumping on the bandwagon usually requires wearing VCU stuff so you blend in. bandwagons gotta love them.

(Good thing is we had a fair amount of our true Ram fan alumni and students so they balanced out the bandwagon.)

Obviously, it's annoying to the diehards who have given so much for so long, but cultivating new fans and getting the attention of people on campus who might not have cared before is a good thing for us.

Well you have to think about it. It's always going to be about the students first. You're not going to turn on college gameday and find a group of alumni and high end donors cheering on their team. I know I am a student and what you would call a new fan, but that's how college sports is. It's not like pro sports when you have major bandwagon fans. That's just the way it is, and sometimes you have to accept it. It is never a bad thing when a couple of wins brings up the school spirit. They may not of felt the ups and downs, but if it brings the university and city together then that's good.

See I have no problem if we get new fans out of bandwagoners and such. Its the ones that don't give a crap and just showed up solely for TV. Not school spirit or pride of our team but for TV. The ones that go there and say this is taking too long/ got better things to do and leave. Its the Sweet 16 celebration who cares if its a little long. Its our first Sweet 16!! OMG You might get back to your dorm a few mins late. I enjoy having a new fans. New fans makes the Rowdies grow. We got plenty of new fans this year in the Rowdies and I enjoyed meeting some of our new Rowdies who really loved VCU b ball. The fans I don't enjoy are the ones who aren't fans and just show up for he or she's noggin to be put on TV. You show up to get on TV and can't even wear anything VCU? I don't care if its purple as long as it has VCU on it.

I liked pav's speech but the people I was around were clearly west enders.

I did not go, but 25 minute speeches are tooo longggg.... Rev up people in 5 to 10 minutes or your will lose their interest.

You'd be amazed how long someone will listen to Pav. I enjoyed the pep speech. The only reason it didn't go over perfect was because of the ones wondering who he was and trying to figure out what players he talking about. The ones who know Pav and the team enjoyed his pep up speech. Also very impressive rendition of the Jrod song Pav.

I like the Dick Vitale Eat Crow banner. Its in good fun and funny but I would have loved to see the money and effort spent on a banner that celebrates Richmond's teams (VCU & UR) I realize that the City of Richmond or Venture Richmond (whoever produced it) wanted some Pub for Richmond. I just think the higher road would shed a better light on Richmond as a city. Who cares what analysts think? VCU and UR getting to the Sweet 16 isnt about Dicky V or Jay Bilas being wrong, its about our programs representing our schools and our city in the best way possible.

Just think this was a great opportunity to praise our schools accomplishments, not to mock some TV persona.

With all that said, the humor isnt lost on me. But how much cooler would a VCU Sweet 16 Banner be hanging down the side of Broad St. ( I realize we'll have one in the Stu after the season....maybe even a Final Four banner)
