Basketball State (run by Kyle Whelliston) has VCU rated #17 in the nation in his 'State of College Basketball Ratings'. It is interesting to note Rhode Island is #11 as well. His ratings are updated every hour as new info is fed into the website.

His rating system is obviously unorthodox and differs a great deal from other college rating systems. Here is how he comes to his ratings:

Here are the CAA teams and their national ratings according to his formula:

Notables include VCU at 17, W&M at 32, ODU at 86, and Northeastern at 92.

i can't give credit to a ranking without Kansas in it. but it's nice to see VCU finally getting some respect from someone

while it is nice to see vcu rated highly that might be the worst poll i have ever seen.

agreed joke of a poll no reason to get excited

I think VCU is a top 50 team right now based on what we have proven so far. Not a top 25 team, there are too many other teams that are doing well so far. What does everyone else think?

it isn't a bad poll because it isn't a poll at all

A poll is a ranking system using purely subjective human opinion. The bball state rating system ...like the RPI, Pomeroy, Sagarin, etc... is a rating system that uses numerical formulas and actual statistical data to rate teams relative to each other. There is still subjectivity involved because of the choice of what types of statistics are used, and the weights each are given in relation to others, but that subjectivity is steps removed from the actual determination of rankings. Each method has its pros and cons... the human touch of polls allows for commonsense ignoring of outlier numbers and recognition of intangible know-it-when-you-see-it qualities, but can much more easily fall prey to emotional/historical bias.

I agree. Latest AP and ESPN/USA today polls (12/14) have W&M getting votes. I don't think we can be too far behind that.

An opinion poll is a survey of public opinion from a particular sample. Opinion polls are usually designed to represent the opinions of a population by conducting a series of questions and then extrapolating generalities in ratio or within confidence intervals.

Questionable stats, but interesting site. Thanks for the link.
