Recruiting VCU Recruiting

I just hope that the new "no NLI needed" NCAA rule or lack of rule doesn't come back to bite us in the behind. I know it will likely have an impact on some programs moving forward as up and coming players jockey for position and NIL dollars. Also, with no NLI required, I wonder if schools/programs themselves will end up dropping fall commits for perhaps someone with more talent from the portal or HS ranks moving into the spring and summer. Or alternatively, other programs attempting to poach already committed players with NIL offers into the spring and summer.

This entire thing is a big cluster-uck if you ask me. THIS ENTIRE THING IS A BIG CLUSTER-UCK if you ask me.
Classic case of ready, fire, aim by NCAA.

This. I know some people are infatuated with the Portal but you can't build a program on that alone. It's not possible. It's going to take a combination of talented freshmen, portal players, and International players to move the needle. Ryan gets it. They are doing a great job on the recruiting trail. I figured this years haul would be a mix of 50% freshmen and 50% portal.
i understand what you are saying but to Move the Needle for VCU (assuming the needle is where we have been for the last 15+ years) the true determinant of what will move the needle is MONEY (NIL and contract money if it is greenlit )

- we will have to be able to pay our top players market rates for their services, assuming our top players are top players for top 50 teams

players want to PLay and get Paid

our facilities, tradition and Coach will only get us in the door (so to speak) and b/4 posters react, I think this offseason was great with the combo of maintaining roster, adding some freshman with talent and upside and using the portal to fill in gaps (though I worried when Shulga initially jumped for the benjamins) and if I had to put a grade on it it would be an "A"

go rams

After Moses Malone, perhaps the best-ever prospect from the 804 is King Bacote, currently an eighth grader at Manchester Middle School.

All indications suggest King, now about 6-4, is headed to John Marshall High .... he's actually practicing with the Justices right now.

In a recent middle school game, King played the first half for Manchester, and then left at halftime to travel crosstown, with his father, and practice with JM. this is highly unusual, but then Bacote is a most special player.

King will never be as tall as older brother Armando .... but he might become the better player.

The middle schools in Chesterfield play on Tuesdays and Thursday, about 3:30 p.m.

Beginning in January, the eighth grader will be playing in a men's league at American Family Fitness, Swift Creek.

prospect is always a very interesting term so hard to really evaluate

as far as best players from 804 - the list has to be 1. Moses Malone 2. Bobby Dandridige

Best players, yes, but throw in eventually.

As for "prospects," Dandridge was more of a late bloomer at Maggie Walker in mid '60s, and inner-city Blacks weren't being recruited much in the south. Consider, the ACC, SEC and major independents hadn't even integrated.

A more decorated prospect was another Walker star, heavily recruited Clyde Austin, who went on to star at NC State and with the 'Trotters.

And don't forget Paul Pressey at Wythe .... check that resume.

Fred "Curly" Neal grew up in Greensboro and starred at JC Smith before joining the 'Trotters and becoming one of the most lovable basketeers ever ..... following his retirement, he did move to South Richmond for a spell and played some pick-up at Westover Playgrounds, although I was never there to see it ...
