VCU to play in Las Vegas tourney during December

I'm a Southern Illinois fan that wanted to pass on some news our AD announced today. VCU and SIU will both be competing in a Las Vegas tournament December 20-22. Here's the full announcement from our site......

The Las Vegas tournament is going to be played on December 20, 21 and 22. At the present time VCU, is scheduled to participate, and the promoter needs to get two more teams to round out the field.

Whoever the 2 other teams are....I hope that our two programs have the chance to play each other. Last year, the Salukis were very young and struggled. Due to a couple of departures and injuries, we played a good portion of 2009 with only 7 players on our roster.

In 2009, we hope to rebound and have our youngsters start to reach their potential (the 2008 class was viewed as one of the best incoming classes in school history).

We need to be tested and I know that VCU always has a good team and I'm sure you'd present a great challenge for our squad.

Can someone please give a synopsis of what you expect out of your program in 2009-2010?

Here's the link to the article if anyone wants to check it out (although the quote above is all that was said about the tourney)...

Also, if anyone wants to come talk basketball with us now or anytime before the game, please feel free to visit.....

All I have to say is that visiting Las Vegas in December would be a lot of fun

Great news! thanks for the tip!

I don't think many of us know quite what to expect next season. We're improved in talent and depth at the 2-5 spots, with a potential lottery pick next year in Junior PF/C, 6'10 Larry Sanders (with a 7'7" wing span).

Our biggest question mark is who will step in to the PG position and fill the void left by Eric Maynor.

Who's going to vegas with me?!

So, is this like last years tournament, where each team plays at home before they go to Vegas? Just curious, because if this tournament is Dec. 20-22, and we have a home game on Dec. 19th with a potentially tough UR squad, how will our guys handle that layover? That would be a lot like last year's BB against Nevada.

It doesn't appear that way. Looks like there will be 4 teams total, and the games are on 12/20, 12/21 and 12/22. I would assume this is a kind of thing where each team plays all of the others. Perhaps the Richmond game gets rescheduled?

Just checked, Richmond has been moved to 12/12.

Yeah, being only that there is four teams I wouldn't imagine it was set-up like last years. But, with a game the day before that is tough. I guess we will have to wait and see if UR is rescheduled, hopefully not before Skeen is available though.

**editted to reflect, "damnit." So, Skeen is no longer available for Richmond. But he will be available for the Vega tournament.

I do know that we usually schedule tourneys that include home games in the early rounds. Also, these Vegas tourneys have had early round games on campus in previous years. However, with 3 days of games in Vegas, it may just be a 4 team round robin tourney with no host schools? I don't really know anymore details than what was posted above...but if I hear anything more, I'll let you know.

The VCU women will be there the same weekend !!! road trip..women will play 3 games...saturday thru monday...tourney hosted by unlv...8 team event !

That tournament is played 5 minutes from my house. It has had 8 teams every other year it has been held. Usually 2 games at campus sites and then 2 games at the Orleans. They have one in November as well. The Nov one has usually had the better field. Doesnt mean they will this year tho.
Hopefully the news will just keep getting better and Eric will be playing in the summer league here next month.

I think I'll be there.

Sounds like one Shufan should be able to make.
