VCU Vs UT

Tennessee has two good players in hopson and harris and they are very good. Willliams is a banger down low but he is slow. they play the same style of ball that we do...full court press and up and down. they shot poorly tonight and barely escaped. with a week to prepare i like our chances. they will take us lightly no matter what pearl says. Most of their guys won't have any clue about VCU. its a great chance for a marquee win on a big stage. This type of win would be very big come march when bids come out !

We wont be overlooked. We will have to play our game and see how things work out. Hopson will be a problem as he is a big wing guard. In both Winthrop, and Wake we had a tough time with the bigger wings.

We have great talent on our team. These kids have played big games before, AAU, some high school, and certainly the vets in CAA and NCAA competition. They wont be star struck any more than UT. In fact UT has a few more younger guys playing.

If Ed shows up, and our bigs are not dominated on the boards we will be fine. If we don't rebound we'll get killed. IMHO, Jamie, Toby, and Brad better strap it on, stay out of foul trouble, and hit the boards like never before. However, it has to be a team effort. Remember the Duke game all guys contributed and our smaller interior players began to rebound, and defend the bigger Blue devils, the same applies here.

As I stated all pre-season this is a talented team built to win now. We can not only compete we can dominate teams. Third in the CAA indeed. :x

I cant wait!

I trust our senior leadership...they have set some pretty lofty goals. I hope Shaka and the staff are ready for the big stage. Hopefully the CBI pays dividends on Wednesday. Would really like to see them set the tone for the season with a couple of marquee wins. I love VCU basketball.

We will have a big challenge on our hands. UT will be well prepared for us. They will not take VCU for granted. Having said that, if we play like we did the last ten minutes of the Wake Forest game, we can beat anyone. Those ten moments were unbeliveable.

Our Bigs will need to stay out of foul trouble and we will need a good interior offensive game from them.

I never thought I would say this, but I hope Erin Andrews is not in attendance (for her sake.)

I like our chances against UT-We must press the entire game-think it will give them fits-also the 3-2 zone gave them problems too even though it didnt bother Wake.

Rebounding on both ends will decide this game.

Tennessee can't shoot, but Bruce will throw lots of long, athletic guys at VCU. Unlike Wake, Vols won't be overwhelmed by VCU's quickness and aggressiveness.

Gonna need to be A LOT stronger in the paint than any of the previous three games.

Still, all things considered, a very winnable game. This NIT bracket really couldn't have set up much better for VCU.

Definitely a winnable game for the Black-and-Gold. They've got some athletes over there, but I do like our experience (and our guys aren't exactly couch potatoes). Also, remember this will be there first game away from home. Assuming this tournament's ticket packages work like NCAA and CAA tournaments...VCU should have the crowd advantage. We're also playing with house money as the unranked underdog going into this. It'll be very interesting to see how some of their young guys in particular respond to this kind of challenge.

Great points. I like our chances with DJ, Skeen, Toby, Juvonte and Hinton. Burgess and Nixon I feel will have to shut people down on D. The PG and team in general will need to get back on D and stop the man with the ball to eliminate their fast-breaks. If three guys hit the boards and box out, two get back at all times then we can do this!

From Andy Katz:

The NIT Season Tip-Off got this one right by not changing its format. The last tournament to hold out and have teams actually earn their way to a neutral site shouldn't complain that VCU upset Wake Forest in Winston-Salem to join Villanova, UCLA and Tennessee in the tourney. VCU, the CAA favorite, was the better team and has the better chance of giving any of the other three higher-profile schools a run next week at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Obviously, that's inaccurate and Andy Katz once again shows he has no idea what he is talking about. Nice pub, but still wrong.

From my quick calculations, Rams are 1-18 vs. the SEC, but that "one" carries an asterisk:

* defeated Auburn team playing with disadvantage of being coached by Sonny Smith.

VCU's 0-3 ledger vs. Vols started with 58-56 OT loss in NCAA second round, 1981, Charlotte. Future NBA star Dale Ellis hit game-winning shot (only points in OT) with one second left. Greg McCray led VCU with 18.

Somehow, VCU worked out a home-and-home series with Vols during Smith era here - UT winning in Knoxville, 77-72, in 1990, and again at Coliseum, 92-78, Dec. 21. 1991. The Richmond game drew 5,974 fans.

The box score from the '81 NCAA contest is interesting - game played at a snail's pace. In 45 minutes action, VCU out-rebounded Vols, 25-19. By contrast, VCu out-boarded Wake, 42-33, in 40 minutes Tuesday night.

In that long-ago NCAA game, called on network TV by Billy Packer, Ed Sherod played full 45 minutes for Rams. Knight, Stancell, Kotak and McCray were all over 40 minutes. In OT game, Rams' "bench" accumulated just 9 minutes. Again, by contrast, the VCU bench played 77 minutes at Wake.
