I found this old CAAzone thread in which Big Horn, VRN's original DB, states that Moses Malone was "seriously considering" VCU! The whole thread is interesting...How 'bout that!

I didn't know about Moses's girlfriend, but it makes sense. For reasons I never comprehended, Malone - the nation's No. 1 prospect - was seriously considering VCU. I even had an insider (a high school principal at one of Petersburg's opponents) offer to bet me a week's paycheck that Malone WOULD sign with VCU. A disbeliever by nature, I didn't take him up on it.

I

Hey, you guys should totally create a VCU History forum just for stuff like this.

Never compare Bighorn to DB. DB provided good, accurate information in regards to the team. 'Horn just complained about the lack of local talent on the team and why we have no white guys on the roster.

Fair enough.
I always got the impression BH was pretty accurate local basketball historian...never saw any posts where he complained about not having white guys on the team.

Interesting discussion on the CAA Zone. Some of the info there I vaguely remember.

Moses had offers from among others, UCLA and Maryland. I believe he was seriously flattered by John Wooden's offer, but had he gone the college route, most likely would have signed with Lefty at Maryland. Come to think of it I believe he actually committed to U.Md. before signing a professional contract.

Big Horn was an RTD sports reporter and is a VCU grad. Prolly knew more about the history of our program than anyone and could write a book about it. Before DB he was the ultimate insider. Often horn obfuscated his information for reasons only known to him. He has a strange sense of humor bordering on snide and has quit posting here. I think he feared being outed for who he truly was as a number of residents here knew his identity.

You are correct, he did sign with Lefty. As a youngster, I saw Moses play his one of his only games in MD uniform as part of summer league team in McDonough Gym at G'town vs. the Washington Bullets Summer league team. It could have been part of the "Jabbo" kenner league back in ('73,74 or 75?).

I take you don't question the veracity of horn's statements. If so, you gottta believe that Moses Malone serioulsy considering VCU at that time more monumental that Rodney Purvis or even Kendrick Warren!

Could you imagine Malone in a VCU uniform in 1974?

i, for one, always enjoyed his posts. wacky dude, no doubt, but people probably gave him a harder time than he deserved.

it's a shame that people started to value historical opinions of 20 year olds over guys like bighorn.

apples and oranges... current event/insider info & analysis is one thing, historical perspective is another

I thought horn's posts were often accurate and many times insightful. Like all of us he could be wrong, but like Wheat, I too usually enjoyed his posts and wish he would return. I also implored him on more than one occasion, to write a history of the program. I know I would enjoy reading it.

Bighorn was great but he was a really passive-aggressive and haughty individual as well.

I don't think he had a peer on these boards as far as his knowledge of VCU's history. He had a near encyclopedic familiarity with all things VCU.

What happened to Bighorn? Did he die?

I dont think so, I think he just stopped posting. Aside from his historical tales, frequently laced with awkwardly forced segues into musical history/puns, he also seemed to like to posit gloomy scenarios about which players were unhappy with playing time, and speculated about who must want to transfer, along with other almost eagerly pessimistic seeming stuff... like he was more interested in told-you-so-s than he was in Ram success. He caught a lot of heck for that, both legit criticism, and perhaps a bit that crossed the line... seemed to push him into taking his ball and going home.
