RICHMOND, Va. – With the start of practice just around the corner, members of the Virginia Commonwealth University men's basketball team accompanied Head Coach Shaka Smart in a trip to Jacobs Road Elementary School on Friday afternoon.

The group spent the afternoon talking, playing and reading with about 150-200 elementary school children. It was a reward for the children that finished their summer reading program.

"We always enjoy having Coach Smart and the players out to our school," Principal Myla Burgess said. "The kids get so excited and the players and Coach Smart always do such an amazing job of putting smiles on their faces."

Yes, if you are wondering Principal Myla Burgess is Brad Burgess' mother. Reco, Juvonte, Rob, Brad, and Ed were there. Pretty awesome to see them giving back to the community.

RE Burgess family; mom Myla has been an administrator in Chesterfield County education for some time, so it's a bit surprising that both sons, Brad and Jordan, went the private school route.

Some of you may not know Keith Burgess (Brad and Jordan's dad); he achieved something few athletes can boast of - he played starring roles on State championship (Group AA) teams in both football (1975) and basketball (75-76) in same school year, for Martinsville High. His basketball coach was the revered Husky Hall, one of the nation's winning'est coaches.

K. Burgess was a 6-2, 185-pound wide receiver on the gridiron who signed with West Virginia.

In high school, one of K. Burgess's rivals was ex-VCU Ram Edd Tatum, who played at a now-defunct school (can't think of name) near Martinsville.
