VCURamNation/RRR: Pierria Henry commits to VCU!

Here's another thread on the West Virginia Message Boards on Henry. The guy who wrote the daily mail article posts there. They all expressed their disappointment that Henry didn't come to WVU, but wished him the best and think he could be star at VCU:

Thats great, he seems like a great kid and I really like to watch him play. Congrats to him and good luck to him at VCU!

Congrats to Perry. We were really hoping to bring him to Huntington.

straight up baller!!! hope he does great at VCU... great program and a great player... i'll bet $20 that he is a starter as a freshman...

i'd always heard rumors that huggs coveted him, what happened?...also, which name does he go by perry, perrie, perriea?...seemed like every time i listened to a football or basketball broadcast the announcers pronounced his first name differently...and in the papers it was always spelled differently...what gives...in any event good luck to him in richmond

It's Pierria (pronounced like the mineral water Perrier) but for many who know him it's just Perry. He's told the Gazette he prefers to be called Pierria, he's told me that he doesn't care what name I use.
He had an offer from WVU. He had offers from WVU, Xavier, Virginia Tech, and I'm thinking South Carolina (don't hold me to that, Herbert mentioned the SEC and I can't think of another offer from there I knew he had) as well as Marshall, OU, and several others.
I know a big, big selling point to VCU was that they were very hands-on when he was in the hospital, pretty much checking in on him every day.

Not every day you can get a recruit offered by a team that went to the Final Four the same year. Good job Shaka and staff!

He chose VCU because he believes Smart and his staff will serve as father-figures; because he believes the Rams will give him a chance to get to the NBA; and because his grandfather and biggest fan, Jerry Stephens, was partial to VCU and its staff after their visit in February. Mr. Stephens died May 3.

"I'm one of those kids who grew up without a dad," Henry said. "The first thing I want when I go to college is a father-figure and somebody I can really trust and lean on while I'm away from my family."

Pierria' must be more than just smart if he was mature enough to figure out that Bob Thuggins is someone you do not want as a father-figure.

Out of all the knocks on Huggins, the he is not a good father figure is the worst. His players all love him and I don't think many coaches would've been on the ground holding a player in their arms (no matter how weird some of us think it might've been) when they just suffered a career threatening injury. Anyway, I'm glad coach Smart and his staff were able to identify what this kid wanted in a program and play to their strengths in order to land him. Hopefully, he will be a great one.

A third major-college prospect made the move from second team in 2009 to first team.

South Charleston junior do-it-all guard Perry Henry (6-4, 16.2 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals per game) has received scholarship offers from West Virginia, Xavier, Virginia Tech, Marshall and five other Division I schools.

Henry’s offensive strong suit is his ability to drive to the basket, but his defensive abilities are his calling card. That much was evident in a first-round state tournament game against George Washington. In that game, Henry scored seven consecutive points in the final 63 seconds and helped force six George Washington turnovers in the final 3 minutes. The outburst helped erase a six-point deficit and led the Black Eagles to their fourth-straight Class AAA semifinals appearance.

Here's a picture of Pierria' from one of his games as a star receiver for the South Charleston Black Eagles:

This is a pretty cool video interview of Pierria' by local station WCHS ABC 8 out of Charleston. The local news did a segment on Henry and his injury, why he picked VCU over offers from several major schools including in-state schools West Virginia and Marshall, and how he's looking at his life after the incident. Henry really is a remarkable young man, and we really do have a special coaching staff. :)

P.S. There is also some video of him in basketball games and on the football field.

Impressive. A lot of poise and insight for a rising HS senior. I am very much looking forward to cheering for Henry in the black and gold.

Seems like a humble, centered young man.

Funny that they referred to us as a mid-major and mentioned he had offers from WVU and Marshall. You just know someone from huggie bear's staff asked whether he'd play again. And Marshall IS a mid-major also!

...and Marshall is a mid-major we would beat handily as well.

Can't blame them, Marshall and West Virginia are the only real universities in the state so they probably don't really think of Marshall in those terms whereas they use 'mid-major' for small-athletic budgets schools that the common person probably doesn't know about which VCU would be for a lot of their viewership.
