The VCU Rams had one more scholarship to give in the class of 2011 and VCU went with a big upside player as head coach Shaka Smart got a commitment from big man Jernard Jarreau. Clark Francis at HoopScoopOnline rated him as the #112 overall player in the Class of 2011. The long and lanky 6′9 forward picked VCU over offers from Washington (PAC-10), Tulane (C-USA), and Louisiana Tech (WAC) and was rated 3-stars by Dave Telep at Scout.com. The New Orleans native sports an impressive 7′3 wingspan but also weighs in at a scanty 180 pounds. Strength and conditioning coach Daniel Roose will no doubt be asked to help change that. With the class of 2010 having averaged 17 pounds in weight gain over the off-season, Jarreau will no doubt improve in that department once he starts up with the Rams.
Clark Francis at HoopScoop had this to say about Jernard following his performance at the Big Shots Tournament in Myrtle Beach during the weekend of July 10th-12th:
The third is 6′10 Jernard Jarreau from New Orleans (McDonough School) LA. We didn’t see anything resembling an outside shot and he has a tendency to stand around and watch too much. But we are talking about a true thoroughbred who clearly was the biggest sleeper to emerge at this event. Jarreau has good ball handling and passing skills for his size and the kind of explosiveness to the basket which is reserved for players who end up playing at the highest level. In other words, we’re talking about a legitimate top 50-100 range player nationally right now and the sky’s the limit.

SlamOnline did a review of some of the top players at the Deep South All-American Camp this past July and here’s what they had to say about Jernard:
A skilled and slender sleeper, Jarreau has developed a lot since I first saw him as a freshman in New Orleans, developing into an interesting inside-outside player with a terrific handle for his size, speed in transition, great passing skills, accuracy on his J out to 15 feet, good post moves, an active force on the boards, solid shot-blocking ability, excellent length, nice athleticism and a willingness to bang, despite his lack of bulk.

Although neither Rivals or ESPN have recruiting profiles up for Jarreau, he was outlined by both services during AAU events that took place this past summer where Jarreau participated on the circuit as a member of New Orleans Elite. Here’s Rivals’ breakdown from the Las Vegas Fab48 where they describe Jarreau and compare him to 4-star (#34 in 2012 Rivals 150) forward Ricardo Gathers (Jarreau was named to the All-Tournament team at this event):
Talk about two totally opposing styles and body types. In Jarreau, you’ve got one of the skinniest big men (around 6-foot-9 and maybe 180 pounds soaking wet) in the class of 2011 and a guy that can face up to shoot, runs the floor and is a long term “upside†guy. Then you have 2012’s Gathers who continues to show that he’s a power-broker in the lane who is relentless at the rim and has a body that is built for playing for big money on Sunday afternoons in the Fall. Though they differ greatly in style, each shows their own type of upside and long term potential.

Here’s ESPN’s evaluation of Jarreau at the Big Shots Tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC this past July where they described him as a ’standout player’:
Garreau’s length is the first thing that stands out about him: his wing span appears to be well over 7 feet. As the game progresses he reveals a small forward’s skill level in transition and ability to finish with either hand. He is a runner/jumper who rebounds and blocks shots with the best of them. He is an intriguing prospect with major upside and in-state schools like Tulane and Louisiana-Lafayette have been on him for a while, with UT-Chattanooga also working hard to attract his services. At the mid-major level, he could be an impact player, and after his play this weekend he is sure to be on the radar of some BCS schools.

Prior to this summer recruiting period Jarreau had offers from schools such as Louisiana and UT-Chattanooga. After some nice performances during the July Evaluation period at tournaments such as the Deep South All-American Camp, Big Shots Tournament and the Las Vegas Fab 48 some bigger schools started calling. Tulane (C-USA), Louisiana Tech (WAC) and most notably Washington (PAC-10) all offered Jarreau scholarships to come play basketball at their respective institutions. Tulsa (C-USA) also offered Jarreau and had an official visit scheduled for later this week before pulling out when they received a verbal from Rashad Smith. VCU also got in on Jarreau’s recruitment this past summer and got him on campus for an official visit on August 28th.
After several days to think over his choices and in-home visit from head coach Shaka Smart, Jarreau made his pledge to become a Ram and join the VCU program. Jarreau is the 4th and final commitment in for 2011 and joins 6′4 Pierria’ Henry, 6′3 Briante Weber, and 6′4 Treveon Graham in that class. With the whole class filled up in the early signing period, the coaches can now turn their attention to the loaded 2012 class where they will have a nice head-start on the rest of the CAA.
On behalf of the Ram Nation I offer a hearty welcome to the newest member of our family, Jernard Jarreau!
GO RAMS!
