The 2009 NBA Draft isn’t expected to be top-heavy with franchise players, nor is it projected to yield a deep pool of prospects. The one exception is point guard, with as many as 10 floor generals jockeying for position in the first round.

Joining them as potential first round selections are Syracuse’s Jonny Flynn, Wake Forest’s Jeff Teague, St. Mary’s Patrick Mills and Oklahoma’s Willie Warren. But no point guard prospect’s more prepared to make an immediate impact in the NBA than Virginia Commonwealth’s Eric Maynor.

The senior’s skills should transfer to the NBA. At 6-foot-3, he has the height to see over defenses and the wingspan to harass opposing ball handlers. He’s quick enough to break down defenses and though the release on his jumper is a bit awkward, it’s consistent enough to demand respect at the next level. He needs to bulk up in order to contend with the bigger guards in the NBA and withstand the grind of an 82-game season.

Great article! :)

I agree great article. Also, you continue to amaze me with the stuff you find, keep posting. I rely heavily on the boards for information now that I live in Florida.

District baller you to an excellent job finding article and posting intelligent information, but in all seriousness what do you do during the day. I really to appreciate all you contribute to the boards but you just have way more free time. Maybe you just know where to hit the hot spots for good articles I don't know.

Google is a great resource. Oftentimes you just need to know where to look. ;) )

I agree. I need another hobby.

On that note, here is one unnamed GM's thoughts on who he thinks the potential lottery picks are (that's 1-14 for those who aren't familiar with the draft).

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2009/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=DraftWatch-090410

So, to give you another perspective on the draft, I went to one of my best sources -- an NBA GM with a strong track record in the draft -- and asked for his breakdown.

"The problem with this draft is that most of the players have pretty large flaws that could hurt their productivity in the NBA," the GM told me. "I think a number of them could be really good, but a few of them are going to be busts. It's really like, 'What's your favorite color? There are some blue players, some red players and some green players. What do you like?'"

This is just one man's opinion on this year's draft. We didn't discuss every player, but here's what he thinks about a number of top NBA draft prospects.

Eric Maynor made the list and here's what he had to say about him.

Eric Maynor, PG, VCU
"He has great size, good speed. He's a good kid. Coaches love him. He's improved every year, which we love. If you're looking at a guy who could come in right now, he's the guy. I think we might have him ranked higher than most teams. I think he's one of the two or three best point guards in the draft."

Very nice words which should have Maynor smiling. Maynor has been hearing from NBA executives that he could go from anywhere from 8-15 in the draft. Higher than I had anticipated, especially considering the underclassmen declaring for the draft. GM's seem to be very high on him! :)

I think he will get a decent draft pick, but those NBA draft boards are so unreliable its not even funny.

Why couldn't he stay for one more year?!?!! :)
Great article DB....Maynor made us proud, here's to a great NBA Career!!!

I think I would disagree.

8-)

Who needs another hobby than talking about VCU basketball with other fans. All day at school I wanna talk some basketball but no one really cares about VCU. I can't post on here but I read up on the boards any time my teachers are rambling on. I think about VCU even when I'm with my girlfriend, sad huh.

Do you get paid for this DB? Seriously, how do you pay your internet bill?
