Vince Williams - NBA Thread

I don’t see either getting into the rafters… definitely not Vince. It’s a college award, so you’d have to put a bunch of players in the rafters before Vince.
Briante absolutely will: three-time conference DPOY, four-time conference all-defensive team, all-time steals leader (by 117 steals), four-time single-season steals leader, most steals in a single game. He will get up there sooner rather than later. In fact, of all players who could be so honored, Briante is likely the most deserving one of the bunch.

You're probably right about Vince, though.

As @WillWeaverRVA pointed out, Briante absolutely has the resume to get his jersey hung. His time playing in the NBA helps, but his time at VCU was plenty for that honor. If he hadn't blown out his knee, he most likely would have broken the NCAA steals record, and he would have done it in four years ... unlike that crosstown guy who needed five to do it.

I'll go one step further and say I'm not sure I can think of any former players right now who are actually more deserving than Briante, particularly since they finally rectified the Jabo Wilkins fiasco.

I agree on Vince. However, we'e never had a Bri nor has most to the NCAA Bri was all league defense for 4 years and CDPOY three straight at least 2 years he wasn't even a starter.

I get it as what we are accustomed to celebrating Bri doesnt cut it but he was elite on the national level, we won a lot of games during his tenure, he helped win quite a few games as such Bri should be so honored.

Vince is in the Tillman category he was very good but he wasnt very good for a long period. Also, his team when he was the guy didnt dance.

Finally, as you state there are a bunch of players who could be in the rafters before Vince and I add Tillman. However, we did vote Troy top 50 all time and we all know that was a damned joke.

I can name a few but none have degrees. Ed, Bodine, Super Nard. I think those three should be given a waiver on the degree requirement as hey played in an era and for HC's where getting a degree was seen as necessary. Also, Kenny Stancil (sp), Phil Stinnie, Nick George, Dom Jones, Bo Jones Jr, maybe Chris Cheeks, BA. to name a few.

Briante was a once in a lifetime defender and we all love him as a person and player.

He still never made 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team all conference in 4 years of college basketball.

I just don’t see how he can have his number retired. It would be easier if VCU had a system like UNC where there are both retired numbers and a lower level of honored jerseys.

And this also comes back to something that I’ve argue for years here. VCU should have criteria for these honors and not just award them year to year based on the whims of the current AD.

We should, but the overwhelming majority of schools don't.

Then again, it would probably be more accurate to say that we retire jerseys and not numbers and that the current system is more akin to a ring of honor. The only actual number one could say we've retired is #3, as no player has worn it since Eric Maynor.

briante will get his jersey hung. has to be an easy decision. i feel like vince would if they won only a single tournament game his last year.

Correct on all counts. But they don’t need any criteria. They pay mortgage and heat the place, so they can do what they want.

However, I would definitely want my gratuity if my name is on jersey.

They can do what they want, but consistency is a good thing with these kind of awards. The way things are done now isn’t good.

I've been here before. at times it's been due to bad stuff running thru my head, at times there's no explanation at all.

“It was fun,” Vince Williams Jr. said. “I got to see what the All-Star feels like.” (Ziggy Mack/The Daily Memphian file)

After helping the Grizzlies to a three-point win over the Milwaukee Bucks on the second half of a back-to-back Thursday night, Williams took an 11:30 p.m. flight to Indianapolis for the NBA All-Star weekend.
