Vince Williams hasn't played the last two preseason games, is he safely on the roster?

He's safely on the roster, just injured.

AND he continues to accrue "service time" while on the roster....That's no small thing for guys who aren't big time stars

(Players earn a quarter of a year's service for every 20 credited games they play. After 10 years of service, players qualify for the maximum pension benefit of $255,000 annually)

You are correct. This is the difference between being totally broke and having a modest for some guys. Yeah they may not be ballers, or for many never were but having an income stream

However, the quote about qualifying is from the NHL not the NBA. Please see

I am pretty sure that you earn an active year after 1 day on the roster. Also, the max is 215k as per the ‘23 collective bargaining agreement.

These new guys have no reason not to at least have a middle class life. The get a 140% 401k match. Most of us would be happy at 8% and estatic at anything over 10%

Plus they can contribute into a post career annuity that will pay them funds until they reach retirement age. Again, not millions but really good money (not NBA money) but good money while you figure it out.

Also, they get health and wealth fare and if they do ten years the kids get health as well. Also, after three years of service they get 62k in tuition reimbursement to retrain for a new career after basketball.

So if our guy Vince only plays out his contract. If he maxes his 40k he has at least 4 years at 23k and 32k = 55 or 220 in net deposits, he’d have roughly 1.5 million at 62 given a 6% rate of return with no further deposits. Then at 62 he’d receive about 60k per year pension. That would only be from basketball doing no other investments.
